אין מיטן װעג אַ קינד אַ טױטס , | There’s a dead child lying in the road, |
אַ מײדעלע מיט בלאָנדע האָר. | A little girl with blond hair. |
נאָך פֿינעף װאָכן אָדער זעקס ־ | Five or six weeks more maybe |
װאָלט עס געװאָרן זיבן יאָר. | She’d have reached her seventh year. |
דער מאַרשאַל גערינג שפּילט זיך מיט זײַן קינד. | Marshal Goering is playing with his child. |

די מאַמע שטײט אין מיטן װעג | The mother is standing in the road, |
און ברעכט די בלײַכע דאַרע הענט, | She wrings her white hands thin with grief. |
זי האָט געזען די שטאָט פֿאַרװיסט, | She saw the town unpeopled |
זי האָט געזען די הײם פֿאַרברענט. | And flames come through her roof. |
דער מאַרשאַל גערינג שפּילט זיך מיט זײַן קינד. | Marshal Goering is playing with his child. |

מיט האַק און פּאַק אױף נע-ונד, | With bags and baggage and they must go |
װאָגלער זענען אַלע די, | Wandering the roads who had |
װאָס האָבן ערשט אַ הײם געהאַט. | A house and home an hour ago. |
דער מאַרשאַל גערינג שפּילט זיך מיט זײַן קינד. | Marshal Goering is playing with his child. |

דער שטאָט-מענטש האָט פֿאַרלאָזט די שטאָט, | Lost all the people who lived there |
װער מיט אַקס און װער צו פֿוס | Who now must ride or walk to know |
װאַנדערט איצט אױף גאָטס באַראָט. | What mercy God can spare. |
דער מאַרשאַל גערינג שפּילט זיך מיט זײַן קינד. | Marshal Goering is playing with his child. |

נײן און נײן, זי װעט נישט גײן. | And there she will remain |
װי לאָזט מען דאָס אין מיטן װעג | For who’d leave lying in the road |
דאָס שלאָפֿנדיקע קינד אַלײן? | Her sleeping child alone? |

אַ גרױסער זילבערנער מעדאַל. | Like a big and silver medal. |

מאַרשירט דאָס ברױנע מיליטער. | Tramp-tramp away to war. |
דער מאַרשאַל גערינג שפּילט זיך מיט זײַן קינד. | Marashal Goering is playing with his child. |

װאָס טרױערט דאָ אין מיטן װעג.» | By the roadside weeping. |

איר טרױער איבערן טױטן קינד, | Grieving like a willow there |
מיט אירע שװאַרץ צעלאָזטע האָר | And the breeezes of September play |
שפּילט זיך דער סעפּטעמבער-װינט. | With her black unfastened hair. |
