LA FARINA DAL DIÀULTHE DEVIL'S FLOUR
Tu saràs domandàt dulà vuardàvin i vuòi di Dìu,
cuàn cha la to vita a è finida 'nte sos mans.
Còntame Menòcjo le sperànzes dal tò cour:
fun e fòùc, faliscjès de la "Santa" Incuisiziòn!
You probably asked yourself where God's eyes were looking
When your life ended up in their hands.
Tell me, Menocchio, the hope that lies in your heart:
Smoke, sparks, and fire from the "Holy" Inquisition.
Astròleg e filosofo, poeta o Benandànt,
co' un libro ch'a tu vèves tu fasèves maravèes.
Cuàn ch'a era la luna o le stèles cò i planèts,
nancja 'l diaul rivàva a fermà pi i to pensèirs.
Astrologer and philosopher, poet and "Benandante" a man of good acts,
With a book you once were able to perform amazing things.
When there was a full moon or the stars aligned themselves to the planets,
Not even the devil was able to stop the stream of your thoughts.
Vòus ch'a se contava, stòríes sènza veretàt,
ma cuàn partis la fòle pì nissùn la pòut fermà.
There were rumours told, stories without foundation,
But when the thunderbolt strikes, nobody can stop it anymore.
"Disarès tàntes è che ròbes ch'a farès stupi la zènt
di un mònd senza diferènzes di colòur, lènga o religjòn"
"Duis i ànzuj e ancja 'l Signòur son nassùs da un messedòt
come i vjars cuàn ch'a vegnun four dal formàj cò l'è passàt."
"I could say so many things that would amaze people:
Of a world without any difference in colour, language or religion."
"All the angels, and also the Lord, were created from a mix,
The same that happens to worms that make their way out of curdled cheese."
E cuàn ch'a 'l mond varà savùt par fin il tò destìn,
vignaràn de Zenèvra pà puartàte in Paradìs:
vin, milùs e aga dùlza pà l'eternitàt.
trapasaràs montagnes fun ché vuòi ch'a tu varàs.
And when finally the world will have known of your destiny,
they will come from Geneva to bring you to Heaven:
wine, apples, and sweetened water for Eternity ,
you will cross mountains with the eyes yon will then have
Ma 'l mond a la revèrsa nàsse e mòur a Carnavàl,
sa'l se svèa l'Orcolàt esis ancja l'Infiòr;
làgrimes, dotrines, sànc, tortùres, religjòns;
cròdeto Menòcjo o puàrteto ancja tu La Cròus?
But the world turned upside down is born and dies at Carnival,
If the earthquake wakes up abruptly, then even Hell exists;
Tears;....doctrines,.....blood,....torture,....religions...:
Do you now still believe, Menocchio, or do you, too, now bear
The Cross?
