THE RHYTHM OF TIME | IL RITMO DEL TEMPO |
| |
There’s an inner thing in every man, | C'è qualcosa dentro ogni persona, |
Do you know this thing my friend? | la conosci questa cosa, amico mio? |
It has withstood the blows of a million years, | Resiste ai colpi da un milione d'anni, |
And will do so to the end. | e così resisterà fino alla fine. |
| |
It was born when time did not exist, | Sorse quando il tempo ancor non c'era |
And it grew up out of life, | e crebbe, poi, dalla vita stessa, |
It cut down evil’s strangling vines, | tagliò del male i viluppi asfissianti |
Like a slashing searing knife. | come una lama che recide ardente. |
| |
It lit fires when fires were not, | Accese fuochi ove fuoco non c'era |
And burnt the mind of man, | incendiando l'animo dell'uomo, |
Tempering leadened hearts to steel, | temprò in acciaio cuori già di piombo |
From the time that time began. | fin dal tempo in cui il tempo iniziò. |
| |
It wept by the waters of Babylon, | Pianse di Babilonia presso ai fiumi |
And when all men were a loss, | e quando ognuno era lasso e perso, |
It screeched in writhing agony, | gridò torcendosi nell'agonia, |
And it hung bleeding from the Cross. | pendette sanguinante dalla croce. |
| |
It died in Rome by lion and sword, | A Roma morì di leoni e di spade |
And in defiant cruel array, | bardato crudelmente per la sfida, |
When the deathly word was ‘Spartacus’ | allor che dire “Spartaco” significava |
Along the Appian Way. | morire in croce lungo la Via Appia. |
| |
It marched with Wat the Tyler’s poor, | Marciò coi derelitti di Wat Tyler 1 |
And frightened lord and king, | terrorizzando i signori e il re, |
And it was emblazoned in their deathly stare, | il suo blasone: il loro sguardo fisso |
As e’er a living thing. | come per sempre vivi nella morte. |
| |
It smiled in holy innocence, | Sorrise con beata innocenza |
Before conquistadors of old, | dinanzi agli antichi conquistadores, |
So meek and tame and unaware, | sì mite, sì mansueto ed incosciente |
Of the deathly power of gold. | del mortale potere che ha l'oro. |
| |
It burst forth through pitiful Paris streets, | Scoppiò per le misere vie di Parigi |
And stormed the old Bastille, | spazzando via la vecchia Bastiglia, |
And marched upon the serpent’s head, | calpestò poi la testa del serpente |
And crushed it ‘neath its heel. | schiacciandola sotto le sue calcagna. |
| |
It died in blood on Buffalo Plains, | Morì nel sangue a Buffalo Plains |
And starved by moons of rain, | crepò di fame per mesi di pioggia, |
Its heart was buried in Wounded Knee, | a Wounded Knee il suo cuore fu sepolto |
But it will come to rise again. | ma ancora nascerà, risorgerà. |
| |
It screamed aloud by Kerry lakes, | Gridò presso i laghi di Killarney 2 |
As it was knelt upon the ground, | mentre veniva abbattuto a terra, |
And it died in great defiance, | morì lanciando ancora la sua sfida |
As they coldly shot it down. | mentre gelidamente lo finivano. |
| |
It is found in every light of hope, | Si trova in ogni luce di speranza, |
It knows no bounds nor space | non conosce spazio né confini, |
It has risen in red and black and white, | è sorto rosso, nero, è sorto bianco, |
It is there in every race. | è sorto in ogni schiatta, in ogni razza. |
| |
It lies in the hearts of heroes dead, | Sta dentro ai cuori degli eroi periti, |
It screams in tyrants’ eyes, | urla di fronte agli occhi dei tiranni, |
It has reached the peak of mountains high, | ha asceso fino le più alte vette, |
It comes searing ‘cross the skies. | vola abbagliante attraverso i cieli. |
| |
It lights the dark of this prison cell, | Viene e dà luce alla prigione oscura, |
It thunders forth its might, | la sua potenza romba come un tuono, |
It is ‘the undauntable thought’, my friend, | è il Pensiero Indomabile, amico mio, |
That thought that says ‘I’m right!’ | quel Pensiero che dice: Ho ragione! |
