O Gorizia, tu sei maledetta

Originale | Versione inglese di Riccardo Venturi |
O GORIZIA, TU SEI MALEDETTA | CURSE UPON YOU, GORIZIA |
La mattina del cinque d'agosto | The fifth day of August in the morning |
si muovevan le truppe italiane | the Italian troops were moving |
per Gorizia, le terre lontane | to Gorizia, that land so far away |
e dolente ognun si partì | and everyone set off in grief. |
Sotto l'acqua che cadeva al rovescio [1] | Under the rain pouring in torrents |
grandinavan le palle nemiche | the enemy’s bullets were hailing |
su quei monti, colline e gran valli | and on those hills, mountains and valleys |
si moriva dicendo così: | people died saying this so loud: |
O Gorizia tu sei maledetta | Alas! Curse be upon you, Gorizia, |
per ogni cuore che sente coscienza | by all hearts feeling a conscience! |
dolorosa ci fu la partenza | We left filled with pain and with sorrow |
e il ritorno per molti non fu | and many of us have never come back. |
O vigliacchi che voi ve ne state | And you cowards, curse be upon you! |
con le mogli sui letti di lana | You lie in soft wool beds with your vives |
schernitori di noi carne umana | sneering at us, poor cannon fodder; |
questa guerra ci insegna a punir | this war learnt us how to punish you. |
Voi chiamate il campo d'onore | You call a field of honour |
questa terra di là dei confini | this land far beyond the border, |
Qui si muore gridando assassini | there we die crying: Butchers! |
maledetti sarete un dì | Curse will be upon you one day. |
Cara moglie che tu non mi senti | My dear wife, you cannot hear me, |
raccomando ai compagni vicini | I pray our closest comrades |
di tenermi da conto i bambini | To watch over our beloved children, |
che io muoio col suo nome nel cuor | I am dying with their names in my heart. |
Traditori signori ufficiali | And you traitors, generals, officers, |
Che la guerra l'avete voluta | you who strongly pushed for this war, |
Scannatori di carne venduta [2] | you’re the butchers of our flesh for sale |
E rovina della gioventù [3] | you’re the ruin of the youth. |
O Gorizia tu sei maledetta | Alas! Curse be upon you, Gorizia, |
per ogni cuore che sente coscienza | by all hearts feeling a conscience! |
dolorosa ci fu la partenza | We left filled with pain and with sorrow |
e il ritorno per molti non fu. | and many of us have never come back. |
