װעגן אַ באַרימטער שטאָט אַדעס,	About the famous city Odessa?
אַך װאָס פֿאַר אַן אומגליק 'ס האָט געטראַפֿן	Oh, what a calamity befell it
אין אײנע צװײ־דרײַ מעת־לעת	In only two-three days.
פּלוצלינג האָט מען אױסגעשריען:	Suddenly, someone yelled:
אײַ שלאָג דעם יּידן װי װײַט איר קאָנט!	“Hey, beat the Jews with all your might!”
אױ, שטײנער אין די פֿענסטער האָבן גענומען פֿליען,	Oh, stones began flying through windows,
אַ פּאָגראָם האָט זיך אױפּגעריסן אין אײן מאָמענט.	And a pogrom was raging in a moment.
מערדער זײַנען אין די גאַסן געפֿלױגן.	Murderers flew through the streets,
מיט די העק, מיט די מעסערס אין די הענט געגרײט,	With axes and knives ready in their hands.
אײַ, װוּ נאָר אַ יּידן געטראָפֿן,	And wherever they found a Jew
אױ, גלײַך אים אױף אַן אָרט געטױט.	They killed him on the spot.
דאָרטן ליגט אַ כּלה אַ שײנע,	There lies a beautiful bride,
זי ליגט אָנגעטאָן אין חופּה־קלײד,	She lies there in her wedding gown,
אױ לעבן איר שטײט אַ מערדער אײנער,	Oh near her stands a murderer
און האַלט דעם שאַרפֿן חלף אָנגעגרײט.	And holds his dagger poised to strike.
דאָרטן ליגט אַ פֿרױ אַ שײנע,	There lies a handsome woman,
זי ליגט פֿאַרװאָרפֿן אין די מיסט.	She lies crumpled in the dirt.
לעבן איר ליגט אַ קינד אַ קלײנע,	Near her lies a little baby
און זײגט איר קאַלטע טױטע בריסט	Sucking her cold, dead breast.
