TALKING VIETNAM POTLUCK BLUES | TALKIN’ BLUES SU UN PICNIC ALLA BUONA IN VIETNAM |
| |
When I landed in Vietnam, | Quando sono arrivato in Vietnam |
I hardly got to see Saigon. | manco ce l’ho fatta a vedere Saigon. |
They shaped us up and called the roll, | Ci hanno bardati e hanno fatto l’appello, |
And off we went on a long patrol. | e siamo andati a fare un lungo pattugliamento, |
Swattin' flies, swappin' lies, | schiacciando mosche, scambiandoci bugie |
Firing the odd shot here and there. | e tirando colpi a casaccio qua e là. |
| |
The captain called a halt that night | Quella notte il capitano ci disse di fare uno stop |
And we had chow by the pale moonlight. | e si mangiò qualcosina al pallido chiardiluna. |
A lovely dinner they planned for us | Ci avevano preparato proprio una bella cenetta |
With a taste like a seat on a crosstown bus. |
Some of the veterans left theirs in the cans | Qualcuno dei veterani lasciò tutto nelle scatolette |
For the Viet Cong to find. . . | perché lo trovassero i Vietcong… |
Deadlier than a land mine. | Più letale di una mina antiuomo. |
| |
Well naturally somebody told a joke | Beh, ovviamente qualcuno raccontò una barzelletta |
And a couple of fellas began to smoke. |
I took a whiff as a cloud rolled by | Io mi feci un tiro come avvolto da una nuvola |
And my nose went up like an infield fly. |
The captain, this blonde fella from Yale, said | Il capitano, quel biondino uscito da Yale, disse: |
"What's the matter with you, baby?" | “Ehi, bimbetto, che ti prende?” |
| |
Well, I may be crazy, but I think not. |
I'd swear to God that I smell pot. | Giuro su Dio che sento odore d’erba. |
But who'd have pot in Vietnam? |
He said, "What do you think you're sittin' on?" | Lui disse: “Su cosa credi di stare seduto?” |
These funny little plants, thousands of them. | ‘Ste buffe piantine, ce n’erano a migliaia, |
Good God Almighty... Pastures of Plenty! | oddìo santissimo! I Pascoli dell’Abbondanza! |
| |
We all lit up and by and by | Tutti quanti s’appicciò, e poco a poco |
The whole platoon was flying high. |
With a beautiful smile on the captain's face | Il capitano aveva una bella faccia sorridente |
He smelled like midnight on St. Mark's Place. | e odorava come a mezzanotte in St. Mark’s Place, |
Cleaning his weapon, chanting the Hare Krishna. | pulendo l’arma e salmodiando “Hare Krishna”. |
| |
The moment came as it comes to all, | Venne il momento, come succede a tutti, |
When I had to answer nature's call.
When I met a little cat in black P.J.'s, | incontrai un tappetto giallo con addosso pigiama nero, |
Rifle, ammo-belt, B.F. Goodrich sandals. | fucile, cinturone e sandali di gommaccia. |
He looked up at me and said, | Mi dette un’occhiata e disse: |
"Whatsa' matta wit-choo, baby?" | “Ehi, bello, andale tutto bene?” |
| |
He said, "We're campin' down the pass | Disse: “Noi stale accampati giù vicino al passo |
And smelled you people blowin' grass, | e annusato voi fumale elba, |
And since by the smell you're smokin' trash | e siccome, dal puzzo, voi stale fumando melda |
I brought you a taste of a special stash | io poltale voi cosina speciale che voi non conoscele, |
Straight from Uncle Ho's victory garden. |
We call it Hanoi gold." | Noi chiamale lei ‘Olo di Hanoi’.” |
| |
So his squad and my squad settled down | E così il suo squadrone e il mio ci si mise a sedere |
And passed some lovely stuff around. | passandoci proprio della bella robetta. |
All too soon it was time to go. |
The captain got on the radio. . . | Il capitano andò alla radio… |
"Hello, headquarters. We have met the enemy | “Pronto, Quartier Generale. Abbiamo incontrato il Nemico |
And they have been smashed!" | e lo abbiamo annientato!”. |
