C'ERA UNA VOLTA UNO SHTETL | ONCE THERE WAS A TOWN |
| |
C'era una volta uno shtetl | There once was a town, |
Sulle rive della valle del Dnjestr, | On the banks of the Dniester Valley, |
cullato dai sogni, | Lulled by dreams, |
c'era una volta uno shtetl così. | There was such a town once. |
| |
Gli ebrei ci vivevano da ebrei, | Jews had lived there like Jews, |
con tante e tante gioie e dolori, | With numberless worries and joys, |
generazioni di abitanti radicati, | Generations of deep-rooted dwellers, |
c'era una volta uno shtetl così. | There was such a town once. |
| |
E le donne vi cantavano canzoni | And women sang songs there |
d'amore con gli occhi pieni di desiderio, | Of loves, with yearning eyes, |
e i bambini, casinisti dispettosi | And kids, mischievous troublemakers, |
si raccontavano storie di fantasmi. | Told each other ghost stories. |
| |
Così lo shtetl di Zvinetshke, | That is how the town Zvinetshke, |
benché rimpicciolito e impallidito dal tempo, | Though smaller and paler with time, |
tesseva il filo d'oro | Spun the golden thread |
degli avi senza cambiare. | Of grandparents without change. |
| |
Ma all'improvviso arrivò come un tuono | But suddenly like a thunderclap it came, |
l'anno millenovecentoquarantuno. | The year nineteen forty-one. |
Il Dnjestr romba minacciosamente, | The Dniester roars menacingly, |
il cielo diventa grigio. | The sky, obscured – gray. |
| |
E soldati in uniformi verdi | Soldiers in gray uniforms |
con fucili fatti per sparare. | With rifles ready to shoot. |
Sul ponte sullo Dnjestr | On the bridge over the Dniester |
hanno annientato tutti. | They wiped them out to the last. |
| |
Il macellaio rituale con sua moglie e otto figli | The ritual slaughterer with his wife and eight children |
li ha avvolti nel suo talìt, shemà Israel! | Wrapped them in his tallis – Shema Yisrael! |
Le grida sono state inghiottite dal Dnjestr, | The cries were swallowed by the Dniester, |
le onde hanno fatto tacere le loro voci. | The waves silenced their voice. |
| |
Oggi i campi sono di nuovo verdi | Today the fields are now green again, |
e il contadino pascola le sue mucche, | And the peasant pastures his cows, |
come se là non gli ebrei non fossero mai esistiti, | As if no Jews were ever there, |
come se niente fosse accaduto. | As if nothing had ever happened. |
