Sulle rotaie, vestito in borghese, cammina
e canta piano una canzone
per calmar la confusione che ha in testa.
Un soldato, un ufficiale,
dentro quel pigiama grigio
quanto vale?
Sulla sua testa risplende tranquilla la luna,
e in cielo cantano le stelle:
"Pensa solo a salvare la tua pelle.
Una vita, un mese, un anno,
resta chiuso nel tuo buco
come un ragno".
In un paese è passata in divisa la morte:
la gente in cerchio sul sagrato,
nella piazza sale un grido soffocato.
Ammazzati come cani,
un cartello appeso al collo:
"PARTIGIANI"

Sur les rails, en tenue civile, il marche
et chante doucement une chanson
pour calmer la confusion qui est dans sa tête.
Que vaut un soldat, un officier,
dans ce pijama gris?
La lune resplendit tranquillement sur sa tête,
et les étoiles chantent dans le ciel:
"Pense seulement à sauver ta peau.
Une vie, un mois, un an,
reste cloîtré dans ton trou
comme un rat*".
La mort en uniforme est passée dans un village:
les gens en rond sur le parvis,
de la place monte un cri étouffé.
Tués comme des chiens,
un écriteau pendu à leur cou:
"PARTIGIANI**"

* ragno= araignée mais rat rend mieux l'idée et l'image.
** partigiani: ce sont les résistants italiens durant la 2ème guerre mondiale
