Rappresenta probabilmente una credenza antichissima, precristiana: una supplica magica piena di devozione per far sì che le divinità esaudiscano le preghiere. L'aver fatto riferimento a questa credenza, è segno inconfutabile che l'anonimo autore della canzone voleva rifarsi alla Bretagna secolare per onorare un bretone considerato un eroe nella sua sofferenza causata dall'ingiustizia.
