Saint Martin de Ré, 28 marzo 1927Saint Martin de Ré, 28 March, 1927.

Carissima Jeanne,Jeanne, my Love,

The first thing I want to tell you, is that I have had no news from you since 23th March last ; but I know that two letters to my name have come to Saint-Martin-de-Ré. Both have been retained by the prison Governor, and so I could not hear anything from you. Departure is scheduled for next 7th April, and I am in the number. So, in 9 days I must leave France, and I cannot cherish a good memory of it. However, as I already told you, my last breathe in my eternal life will be for you.

I bid you farewell today, for I shall see you no more, nor shall I see the children anymore. I do not want to write them anything special, because this will only increase their sorrow. Please hug and kiss them from me, with all your strength, and tell them all what I feel for them at the bottom of my heart. I know well that my words would never be as clear as what you can guess yourself.

This is the last letter I am writing you from France. I say « from France » because one never knows, and you know well that the journey on which I am forced to set out is a terrible one, especially in the conditions being imposed on us. But, be sure, death is nothing to me. Rather, it is a liberation, especially to one who cannot hope anything more.

I pray you, my beloved Jeanne, do not even try to come and see my departure, for our sorrow would be too deep, for both of us. It has been so for all those who have sailed in the same conditions.

Ti dico allora un’altra volta addio ! Addio, addio, addio ! Arrivederci in cielo !Once again I bid you farewell ! Adieu, adieu, adieu ! See you in Heaven !

Ricevuta notizia troppo tardi. Parti felice Guillaume mio. Nessun addio.Got news too late. Sail happy my Guillaume. Nothing is more beautiful than a martyr’s death. Take my heart with you. Never forget it. Struggle goes on. Am firm until dead. No farewell.
