THE FOLK SONG ARMYEL EJÉRCITO DE LA NUEVA CANCIÓN
We are the Folk Song Army,
Ev'ryone of us cares.
We all hate poverty, war, and injustice,
Unlike the rest of you squares.
Somos los guerrilleros
de la Nueva Canción.
odiamos la injusticia y la guerra,
no como ustedes, burgueses.
There are innocuous folk songs,
But we regard them with scorn.
The folks who sing 'em have no social conscience
Why, they don't even care if Jimmy Crack Corn.
Hay canciones idiotas
que nos ponen de muy mal humor.
Los que las cantan no tienen vergüenza
A esos pocos les importa
si la viuda de Canales se casó.
If you feel dissatisfaction,
Strum your frustrations away,
Some people may prefer action,
But give me a folk song any old day.
Si ustedes están disconformes
ahuyenten sus frustraciones,
no con la acción como algunos,
sino con bravas canciones.
The tune don't have to be clever,
And it don't matter if you put a couple extra syllables into a line.
It sounds more ethnic if it ain't good English,
And it don't ever gotta rhyme---excuse me---rhyne.
La música puede ser tonta
y no importa si en alguna línea usted se ve forzado a colocar un par de sílabas de más.
Suena más bella si está mal cantada
y si no rima jamás.
(Oh, perdón: nunca!)
Remember the war against Franco?
That's the kind where each of us belongs.
Though he may have won all the battles,
We had all the good songs.
¿Recuerdan la guerra española
que tanto nos conmovió?
Aunque Franco ganó las batallas,
a hacer canciones ¿quién nos ganó?
So join in the Folk Song Army,
Guitars are the weapons we bring
To the fight against poverty, war, and injustice.
Ready! Aim! Sing!
Por eso enrólense en nuestras filas.
La guitarra es nuestro cañón.
Con ella venceremos la guerra y el hambre.
Listos, apunten, ¡canten!
