English translation by Howard Fast of the poem by Nazim Hikmet Versione...

THE LITTLE DEAD GIRL

A little girl is at your door,
At every door, at every door,
A little girl you cannot see
Is at your door, is at your door

And for me, there will never be
The love and laughter you have known.
At Hiroshima, do you see,
My flesh was seared from every bone.

My hair was first to feel the flame,
Hot were my eyes and hot my hands,
Only a little ash remained,
Where I had played upon the sands.

Stranger, what can you do for me,
A little ash, a little girl?
A human child like paper burned,
An ash for the cooling wind to swirl.

A little dead child, burned by strife,
Oh, stranger please do this for me,
Your name on the scroll, peace and life,
And peace and life for all like me.
[1] Please, open the door; I’m the one who’s knocking,
Knocking on this door, knocking on that door.
Do not fear me, the girl you cannot see,
The dead girl who nobody can see.
I died there, in Hiroshima,
In Hiroshima on a summer morning;
I was seven then, and I am seven now;
Dead children never grow up.
The flames swallowed it all up:
My hair, my arms, my eyes.
My body became a handful of ashes,
Ashes carried away on the cold wind.
Please, I beg of you –
Though I need no bread or rice,
And I cannot taste the sweetness of candy,
I have been burned up like scraps of paper.
It’s me who’s knocking on the door, it’s me;
Please, somehow, bring peace to this world,
So that no more children are burnt in the flames,
So that they can still taste the sweetness of candy.
