A SOLDIER'S SONG | LA CANZONE DI UN SOLDATO |
| |
Through many a battle and half the world | Per tante battaglie, per mezzo mondo |
Behind my unit I trudged and crawled. | ho faticato e strisciato dietro al mio reparto. |
Then home they brought me, all sick and mauled, | Poi m’han portato a casa, malato e sbattuto |
In a special train of the medical corps. | su un treno speciale della Sanità. |
| |
In a truck they delivered me to the door | Su un camion m’hanno scaricato alla porta |
Of my house, right on the threshold. | di casa mia, proprio sulla soglia. |
I stared and was dumbstruck by what I saw: | Guardandola fisso, rimasi basito alla vista : |
The smoke from the chimney seemed special. |
| |
The windows were bent on avoiding my eye, | Alle finestre si cercava di evitare il mio sguardo |
And the lady inside didn't greet me as kin, | e la donna di casa non mi salutò come uno di famiglia, |
Didn't throw herself on my breast with a cry, | non mi abbracciò certamente piangendo, |
Just threw up her hands and hurried back in. | appena alzò le braccia e tornò dentro in fretta. |
| |
And the dogs started baying and tugging the chain | E i cani presero a latrare e a tirar la catena, |
As I passed through the foyer's tight squeeze, | mentre passavo tra la calca che c’era in casa ; |
And I stumbled on something that wasn't even mine, | inciampando in qualcosa che manco era mia, |
Felt the door, and went weak in the knees. | sentii la porta ed entrai, debole, ginocchioni. |
| |
There sat at the table, where I used to sit, | Sedeva a tavola, al mio posto di sempre, |
The new man of the house, looking darkly. |
And by him was a woman and why - that was it - | Accanto a lui c’era una donna, ed è per questo, |
That's why the dogs were barking. | è per questo che i cani abbaiavano. |
| |
Man alive, I thought, while I was pulling my weight | E dunque –pensavo- mentre facevo il mio dovere |
Under fire, denied all mercy and wisdom, | sotto il fuoco, negando ogni pietà e saggezza, |
He moved things around my house in his way, | quello aveva spostato ogni cosa, a casa mia |
And changed them around as it pleased him. |
| |
While we prayed to God before every attack | Mentre, prima d’ogni attacco, pregavamo Dio |
That his covering fire might not fail... |
But this deadlier blow was struck from the back, | Ma questo colpo, più mortale, era sferrato alle spalle |
And it stuck in the heart like betrayal. |
| |
I doubled up, peasant-like, with a low bow, | Mi profusi, come un servo, in un profondo inchino, |
I summoned all my wilt and I whispered: | feci appello a tutta la mia volontà e mormorai : |
Well, excuse my mistake, I'll be going now, | « Bene, scusate il mio errore, ora me ne vado, |
It's the wrong house, friends, it must be. | è la casa sbagliata, amici, dev’esser così. » |
| |
What I meant was: May you have peace and love | Questo volevo dire : Possiate aver pace e amore |
In your house, and bread in the oven... |
As for him, well, he didn't even look up, | Quanto a lui, beh, manco alzò lo sguardo, |
As though what had happened was normal. | come se tutto l’accaduto fosse normale. |
| |
The floorboards swayed as though bereft, | Traballò, sverniciato, il piancito di legno, |
But I didn't slam the door as I did once - | ma non sbattei la porta come facevo un tempo. |
Only the windows opened as soon as I left, | Le finestre s’aprirono appena me ne fui andato |
And gave me a guilty look from a distance. |
