DNIA PIERWSZEGO WRZEŚNIA | ON THE 1ST OF SEPTEMBER |
Posłuchajcie ludzie smutnej opowieści, | People, listen to a sad story, |
Co ja wam zaśpiewam, w głowie się nie mieści. | What I'm going to sing to you will boggle your mind, |
Co ja wam opowiem to jest smutne bardzo, | What I'm going to tell you is very sad, |
Niechaj Wasze serca biedakiem nie wzgardzą, | Don't let your hearts despise the beggar, |
Dnia pierwszego września roku pamiętnego, | On 1st of September of the memorable year, |
Wróg napadł na Polskę z kraju sąsiedniego. | The enemy from a neighbouring country attacked Poland. |
Najgorzej się zawziął na naszą Warszawę, | They particularly disliked our Warsaw, |
Warszawo kochana, tyś jest miasto krwawe. | Our Beloved Warsaw, you are a bloody town. |
Kiedyś byłaś piękna, bogata, wspaniała, | You used to be beautiful, rich, wonderful, |
Dzisiaj tylko kupa gruzów pozostała. | But today what is left is ruins. |
Kościoły zburzone, domy popalone, | Churches destroyed, houses burnt down, |
Gdzie się mają schronić ludzie poranione? | Where are the hurt people supposed to find shelter? |
Lecą bomby z nieba, brak jest ludziom chleba, | The bombs are falling down from the sky, the people lack bread, |
Nie tylko od bomby, umrzeć z głodu trzeba. | We will die not only because of the bombs but of starvation. |
Lecą bomby, lecą od wieczora do dnia, | The bombs are falling down, from dusk to dawn, |
Nie ma kropli wody do gaszenia ognia. | There is not enough water to put down the fire. |
Kościoły zburzone, domy popalone, | Churches destroyed, houses burnt down, |
Gdzie się mają schronić ludzie wygłodzone? | Where are the starving people supposed to find shelter? |
Matka szuka syna, głośno wzywa Boga, | A mother is seeking her son, loudly calling God, |
Błaga o ratunek wypatrując wroga. | She's begging for rescue, looking out for the enemy. |
Gdy biedna Warszawa w gruzach pozostała, | When the miserable Warsaw crumbled into ruin, |
To biedna Warszawa poddać się musiała. | This miserable Warsaw had to surrender. |
I tak się broniła całe trzy tygodnie! | It did defend itself as long as three weeks anyway! |
Jeszcze Pan Bóg skarze wrogów za ich zbrodnie! | The Lord will surely find the way to punish the enemy for their crimes! |
Co ja wam tu śpiewam, w głowie się nie mieści, | What I'm singing here for you is unbelievable, |
Teraz będzie koniec mojej opowieści. | This is the end of my story now. |
Posłuchajcie, ludzie, z nami łaska Boża, | Listen, people, God's grace is with us, |
Odbudujem Polskę od gór aż do morza. | We will rebuild Poland, from the mountains to the sea. |
