Addio Venezia, addio, Venezia salutiamo. | GOODBYE VENICE [18 NOVEMBER] On 18 November Darkness suddenly fell, When we boarded the steamboat [1] We were caught by fear. Hearing the siren whistle, Hearing the cannon roar, We poor people had to seek refuge Under the air raid. [2] The steamboat steward Told us to look for shelter So that we couldn't be harmed By machine-gun shootings. Goodbye, Venice, goodbye, We are leaving! Goodbye, Venice, goodbye, We say goodbye to you. [3] As we passed through Malamocco, All the neighbourhood women Were asking us: Where are you coming from? We're coming from Cannaregio, San Giacomo and Castello, We have to evacuate from Venice With just a small bundle. Once ashore in Chioggia We had to camp there As if we were Poor soldiers. After three hours and more A troop-train came to take us, The poor children were given Some dirty water to drink. For lunch, we were given Frozen meat to eat, So tasting, that we all thought There was piss inside. Then midway Rovigo and Ferrara The train made a long stop, All the night long Until the morning came. After two days journey In pain and in distress, We finally came to Pesaro Looking like pilgrims. |
