EL MAESTRO | THE TEACHER |
| |
Con el alma en una nube | With the soul on a cloud |
y el cuerpo como un lamento, | and his body like a lament |
viene el problema del pueblo, | comes the village's trouble |
viene el maestro. | comes the teacher. |
| |
El cura cree que es ateo, | The priest thinks he's an atheist |
y el alcalde, comunista; | and the mayor, communist |
y el cabo jefe del puesto | and the chief-post cape thinks |
piensa que es un anarquista. | he is an anarchist. |
| |
Le deben treinta y seis meses | They owe him thirty six months |
del cacareado aumento | of the boasted raise |
y él piensa que no es tan malo | and he thinks is not so bad |
enseñar toreando un sueldo. | to teach bull-fighting a salary. |
| |
En el casino del pueblo | In the village's casino |
nunca le dieron asiento | they never gave him a sit |
por no andar politiqueando | for not coming "politicking" |
ni ser portavoz de cuentos. | nor to be a tales' spokesman. |
| |
Las buenas gentes del pueblo | The good village people |
han escrito al menisterio | have written to the Department |
y dicen que no está claro | and they say is not clear |
cómo piensa este maestro. | how this teacher thinks. |
| |
Dicen que lee con los niños | They say he reads with the children |
lo que escribió un tal Machado, | what wrote someone named Machado |
que anduvo por estos pagos | who was by this neck of the woods |
antes de ser exilado. | before he was exiled. |
| |
Les habla de lo innombrable | He talks to them about the unspeakable |
y de otras cosas peores, | and about other worst things |
les lee libros de versos | he reads them books of verses |
y no les pone orejones. | and doesn't put them donkey's ears. |
| |
Al explicar cualquier guerra | When he explains any war |
siempre se muestra remiso | he always get cautious |
por explicar claramente | to explain clearly |
quién venció y fue vencido. | who won and who was defeated. |
| |
Nunca fue amigo de fiestas | He never was friend of parties |
ni asiste a las reuniones | nor attends to the meetings |
de las damas postulantes, | of the advanced |
esposas de los patrones. | ladies bosses' wifes. |
| |
Por estas y otras razones, | For these and other reasons |
al fin triunfó el buen criterio, | at the end the good judgment won |
y al terminar el invierno | and at the fall of the winter |
le relevaron del puesto. | they relieve him from the post. |
| |
Y ahora las buenas gentes | And now the good people |
tienen tranquilo el sueño, | have calmed the sleep |
porque han librado a sus hijos | because they have released their children |
del peligro de un maestro. | from a teacher's danger. |
| |
Con el alma en una nube | With the soul on a cloud |
y el cuerpo como un lamento, | and his body like a lament |
se marcha el padre del pueblo, | goes out the people's Father |
se marcha el maestro. | goes out the teacher. |
