THE LAMENT OF THE BORDER WIDOWIL LAMENTO DELLA VEDOVA DI FRONTIERA

My love he built me a bonny bower,Una bella camera mi fece il mio amore,
And clad it a’ wi’ lilye flour;La rivestì tutta quanta di fiori di giglio;
A brawer bower ye ne’er did seePiù bella dimora non avreste mai visto
Than my true love he built for me.Di quella che mi fece il mio amore.

There came a man by middle day,Ma venne un uomo, venne in pieno giorno
He spied his sport and went away,A spiare quello che lui faceva;
And brought the king, that very night,La notte stessa fece entrare il Re In camera,
Who brake my bower and slew my knight.e uccise il mio cavaliere.

He slew my knight to me sae dear,Il mio cavaliere, per me tanto amato,
He slew my knight and poin’d his gear;Lo uccise e vendette tutte le sue cose;
My servants all for life did fleeI servi fuggiron per salvarsi la vita
And left me in extremitie.E mi lasciarono in preda agli stenti.

I sew’d his sheet, making my mane,Cucii il suo sudario e gli cantai il lamento,
I watched the corpse myself alane,Vegliai il suo corpo, lo vegliai da sola;
I watched his body night and day;Vegliai il suo corpo giorno e notte,
No living creature came that way.Nessuno venne a vegliare con me.

I took his body on my back,Presi il suo corpo, lo presi in ispalla,
And whiles I gaed, and whiles I sate;Facevo un passo e cadevo a sedere;
I digg’d a grave and laid him in,Scavai una fossa, ve lo posi dentro,
And happ’d him with the sod sae green.Lo ricoprii con le verdi zolle.

But think na ye my heart was sairV’immaginate la pena nel cuore
When I laid the moul on his yellow hair?Quando di terra coprii i biondi capelli?
O think na ye my heart was waeV’immaginate la pena nel cuore
When I turn’d about, away to gae?Quando andai via, voltandomi indietro?

Nae living man I’ll love again,Mai più nessuno avrà il mio amore
Since that my lovely knight is slain;Perché il mio amato oramai giace ucciso;
Wi’ ae lock of his yellow hairCon una ciocca dei suoi biondi capelli
I’ll chain my heart for evermair.Ho incatenato il mio cuore per sempre.
