HARRY WILMANS, IL SOLDATOHARRY WILMANS

Avevo appena ventun anniI was just turned twenty-one
e Henry Phipps sovrintendente della Scuolaand Henry Phipps, the Sunday-school superintendent,
fece un discorso al Teatro Bindle.made a speech in Bindle's Opera House.
“L'onore - ci disse - della bandiera va difeso,"The honor of the flag must be upheld," he said,
sia che venga assalita dai barbari Tagalog"whether it be assailed by a barbarous tribe of Tagalogs
o dalla potenza più forte d'Europa”.or the greatest power in Europe."
E noi altri applaudimmo il discorso e la bandieraAnd we cheered and cheered the speech and the flag he waved
che lui sventolava parlando.as he spoke.
Così andai alla guerra nonostante mio padre,And I went to the war in spite of my father,
e seguii la bandiera finché la vidi levarsiand followed the flag till I saw it raised
nel nostro campo tra risaie vicino a Manila.by our camp in a rice field near Manila,
Tutti noi acclamammo, acclamammo,and all of us cheered and cheered it.
ma là c'erano mosche e bestie velenose;But there were flies and poisonous things;
c'era l'acqua mortifera,and there was the deadly water,
e il caldo crudeleand the cruel heat,
e il cibo nauseante e putridoand the sickening, putrid food;
[e il fetore della latrina proprio dietro alle tende,and the smell of the trench just back of the tents
dove ci si andava a vuotare;where the soldiers went to empty themselves;
le puttane impestate che ci venivano dietro;and there were the whores who followed us, full of syphilis;
e atti bestiali tra noialtri e da noi soli,]and beastly acts between ourselves or alone,
e tra noi prepotenze, odio, abbrutimento,with bullying, hatred, degradation among us,
e giornate di disgusto e notti di terroreand days of loathing and nights of fear
fino all'assalto traverso la palude fumante,to the hour of the charge through the steaming swamp,
seguendo la bandiera,following the flag,
quando caddi gridando con gli intestini trapassati.till I fell with a scream, shot through the guts.
Ora c'è una bandiera su di me a Spoon River.Now there's a flag over me in Spoon River!
Una bandiera! Una bandiera!A flag! A flag!
