gelbart

Spagna, 1937. Volontari della Compagnia Ebraica "Naftali Botwin". Spain, 1937. Volunteers of the Jewish "Naftali Botwin" Company.

The Naftali Botwin Company, an all-Jewish, Polish-based unit of the International Brigades in Spain, was formed on this date in 1937. The Company had about 150 members from Poland, France, Belgium, Palestine and Spain. They published a Yiddish newspaper and bore a flag with the words, “For your freedom and ours,” in Yiddish and Polish on one side and in Spanish on the other. Among its fighters was Olek Nuss, a Yiddish poet who wrote the company’s anthem. The Botwins also included the only two Arabs in the International Brigades, one of whom was from Jerusalem and spoke Yiddish. The company went into action against Franco’s fascist uprising in February and March, 1938. Only 18 of the original company survived. After Israel’s Six-Day War in 1967, all of the memorials to the Botwin Company in Poland were taken down by the government.

“Jew, worker or man of the people, wherever you might be: in France, in Poland, in Romania, in Palestine or in America, wherever you live, where you work and suffer, know this: your hope for the defeat of Hitler and Mussolini is being decided today in Spain. Worker, intellectual, or simply Jew of the people, without distinction of political tendency or social class, try to forget all that separates us and retain all that unites us.” —Yiddish broadcast on Spanish radio, 1938, translated by Mitchell Abidor

MARCIAN FOLLE

Avanti, fratelli, nelle schiere,
portate alti gli stendardi!
Marcian folle, folle, folle,
Marcian folle, folle, folle
In battaglia alla vittoria !
Marcian folle, folle, folle,
Marcian folle, folle, folle
In battaglia alla vittoria !

Chi esita e ha paura
Non lotterà assieme a noi,
Costui è nato schiavo,
Costui è nato schiavo
E deve starsene a casa.
Costui è nato schiavo,
Costui è nato schiavo
E deve starsene a casa.

Serrate forti le schiere,
Testa alta e petto in fuori.
Marcian folle, folle, folle,
Marcian folle, folle, folle
In battaglia alla vittoria!
Marcian folle, folle, folle,
Marcian folle, folle, folle
In battaglia alla vittoria!

Se marciamo uniti, è certo
Il nostro cammino verso la vittoria,
È nato per esser schiavo,
È nato per esser schiavo
Chi se ne resterà a casa.
È nato per esser schiavo,
È nato per esser schiavo
Chi se ne resterà a casa.

Comrade soldiers! Officers and commanders of the Dombrowski Brigade! Comrade Jewish volunteers!

Today, December 12, 1937, there has been added to our glorious and great family of antifascists combatants, the Naftali Botwin Jewish Company. Since the day of our arrival on Spanish soil, our brigade, all of our volunteers have been, first as a company, later as a battalion, and now as a brigade, a great fraternal family that unites all its combatants: Poles, Germans, Ukrainians, Bielorussians, Jews, Hungarians, Spaniards and others.

The common struggle, the common blood spilled, have brought us all increasingly together, and have taught us to esteem and love each other.

We antifascists, without distinction of nationality or political conviction, are firm in putting forth yet another great effort in the struggle against fascism, racism, and anti-Semitism, the struggle for a People’s Spain free for the liberation of humanity from fascist bestiality and slavery.

The antifascists of all countries have assisted in the struggle for your liberty and ours.

Among the volunteers of the International Brigades, and especially in the Dombrowski Brigade, the Jewish volunteers have always distinguished themselves by their heroism, their fighting spirit, and their devotion to the struggle against fascism.

Outside Madrid, at Guadalajara, at Brunete, at Saragossa, everywhere that our brigade found itself engaged in the struggle against humanity’s mortal enemy — fascism — Jewish volunteers have been found in the front rank, setting an example of heroism and anti-fascist consciousness.

In stressing their great number and the importance of Jewish volunteers in the Dombrowski Brigade, and in order to commemorate the Jewish fighters who have fallen for freedom, we have decided that the Second Company of the heroic Polish Palafox Battalion will be known as the Jewish Company, bearing the name of Naftali Botwin.

The name of Botwin is dear to all of us.

Botwin is the name of the Jewish worker from Poland who sacrificed his young life in the struggle against reaction and fascism, fighting courageously and dying heroically, sentenced to death by a fascist tribunal.

His name is a symbol, and his life an example, of the heroic struggle of the Jewish masses for your freedom and ours, a symbol of international solidarity and the brotherhood of peoples.

HOSTS GO!

Forward brothers in the ranks
hold high your banners!
Hosts go, go, go!
Hosts go, go, go!
In the fight for victory ahead!
Hosts go, go, go!
Hosts go, go, go!
In bem fight for victory ahead!

Whoever hesitates and will not join us
in the fight then should stay home,
Then he was born to be a slave,
Then he was born to be a slave
And should stay at home!
Then he was born to be a slave,
Then he was born to be a slave
And should stay at home!

Fast, strong close the ranks,
Head up and chest forward,
Hosts go, go, go!
Hosts go, go, go!
In bem fight for victory ahead!
Hosts go, go, go!
Hosts go, go, go!
In bem fight for victory ahead!

Our road to victory is certain
When we remain united as we march,
That which was born to be a slave,
That which was born to be a slave
Which will remain at the home!
That which was born to be a slave,
That which was born to be a slave
Which will remain at the home!
