Pick a Bale of Cotton
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"Pick a Bale of Cotton" (sometimes "Pick a Bale o' Cotton") is a traditional American folk song and work song first recorded by Texas inmates James "Iron Head" Baker (1933) and Mose "Clear Rock" Platt (1939) and later popularized by Lead Belly (Huddie William Ledbetter). Johnny Cash, as well as others, have released adaptations of the song.

Original lyrics
One of the verses, according to John Lomax's American Ballads and Folk Songs, includes:

Dat nigger from Shiloh
Kin pick a bale o' cotton
Dat nigger from Shiloh
Kin pick a bale a day

Later versions of the folk song had amended the lyrics to:

Gonna jump down, turn around
Pick a bale of cotton
Gonna jump down, turn around
Pick a bale a day
Oh lordy, pick a bale of cotton
Oh lordy, pick a bale a day

The song is sung with increasing speed as it progresses, with ensuing verses having references to "me and my wife" replaced with the likes of "me and my gal", "me and my papa", "me and my friend".

Pick a Bale of Cotton: About the Song

During the time of slavery and beyond, work on the Southern plantation was often enlivened by the singing of work songs. Singing moved the work along faster and made the physical labor and drudgery a little easier to bear. A bale of cotton weighs 500 pounds, which is more than anyone could really pick in a single day.
Jump down, turn around to pick a bale of cotton
Jump down, turn around to pick a bale a day.

Oh Lordy, pick a bale of cotton,
Oh Lordy, pick a bale a day.

That nigger from Shiloh can pick a bale of cotton
That nigger from Shiloh can pick a day.

Oh Lordy, pick a bale of cotton,
Oh Lordy, pick a bale a day.

Me and my gal can pick a bale of cotton
Me and my gal can pick a day

Oh Lordy, pick a bale of cotton,
Oh Lordy, pick a bale a day.

Me and my wife can pick a bale of cotton
Me and my wife can pick a day

Oh Lordy, pick a bale of cotton,
Oh Lordy, pick a bale a day.

Me and my buddy can pick a bale of cotton
Me and my buddy can pick a day

Oh Lordy, pick a bale of cotton,
Oh Lordy, pick a bale a day.

Me and my poppa can pick a bale of cotton
Me and my poppa can pick a day

Oh Lordy, pick a bale of cotton,
Oh Lordy, pick a bale a day.

Takes a might big man to pick a bale of cotton
Takes a might big man to pick a day

E' una cover metrica. L'America lo ha dimostrato in questi giorno ha due facce: una progressista e democratica e una razzista, conservatrice che è nata e cresciuta sulla sopraffazione.

JUMP DOWN, SPIN AROUND

Gotta jump down, spin around and pick a bale of cotton
Gotta jump down, spin around and pick a bale a day
Gotta jump down, spin around and pick a bale of cotton
Gotta jump down, spin around and pick a bale a day

I saw 'skeeter on my head
Blinked his eye and I killed him dead
Gotta jump down, spin around and weed a patch o'turnip
Gotta jump down, spin around and weed a patch a day
Gotta weed a patch o' turnip
Gotta jump down, spin around and weed a patch o'turnip
Gotta jump down, spin around and weed a patch a day

I saw a gal in calico
She tripped and fell, and she didn't say hello
Gotta jump down, spin around and cook a mess o'greens
Gotta jump down, spin around and cook a pot a day
Gotta cook a mess o'greens
Gotta jump down, spin around and cook a mess o'greens
Gotta jump down, spin around and cook a pot a day

I got a pig who's nice and greasy
All you ladies shake it easy
Gotta jump down, spin around and tote a pail o' water
Gotta jump down, spin around and tote a pail a day
Gotta tote a pail a day
Gotta jump down, spin around and tote a pail o' water
Gotta jump down, spin around and tote a pail a day

Pickin' Cotton All Day Long (Traditional)

Testo e nota da Azizi Powell.

This comedic song is about a preacher (minister) visiting people on Sunday (when it was common to have fried chicken for dinner.) The "pickin cotton all day long" chorus doesn't have anything to do with the preacher and chicken verses.

Pickin’ cotton ,cotton pickin’ all day long,
Pickin’ cotton ,cotton pickin’ all day long.

If you want to hear the preacher pray ,all day long,
Kill the chicken and give him no plate all day long.

Pickin’ cotton ,cotton pickin’ all day long,
Pickin’ cotton ,cotton pickin’ all day long.

If you want to hear the preacher sing, all day long,
Kill the chicken and give' em a wing all day long.

Pickin’ cotton ,cotton pickin’ all day long,
Pickin’ cotton ,cotton pickin’ all day long.

If you want to hear the preacher pray, all day long,
Kill the chicken and give him no plate, all day long.

Pickin’ cotton ,cotton pickin’ all day long,
Pickin’ cotton ,cotton pickin’ all day long.

If you want to hear preacher preach, all day long,
Kill the chicken and give' em a piece all day long.

Pickin’ cotton ,cotton pickin’ all day long,
Pickin’ cotton ,cotton pickin’ all day long.
