[Inizio 900]

Deep River of Song: Big Brazos: Texas Prison Recordings, 1933 and 1934

Negro Work Songs & Calls

Negro Prison Camp Worksongs

Quanto a Leadbelly, la Library of Congress – sempre grazie all’eredità dei Lomax – dedicò alla canzone un’intera raccolta di sue canzoni registrate tra il 1934 e il 1943 e intitolata, appunto, “Go Down Old Hannah”, pubblicata nel 1995:

Go Down Old Hannah

Lead Belly's Last Sessions

“They called the sun Old Hannah because it was hot, and they just givee it a name. That's what the boys called it when I was dawn in prison. I didn’t hear it before I went dawn there. The boys were talking about Old Hannah. I kept locking and I didn't see no Hannah, but they looked up and said, ‘That’s the sun’”.
Go down old Hannah,
and don't you rise no more
And if you do rise in the morning,
set the world on fire.

It was soon one morning
when the sun did rise
I was thinking 'bout my good-looking baby
hang my head and cry.

Go down old Hannah,
don't you rise no more
And if you do rise in the morning,
set this world on fire.

If you had been on the river
somewhere in 1910,
They was driving the women
just as hard as they do the men.

You go down old Hannah
and don't you rise no more,
So if you rises in the morning
bring judgement day.

Yes, I run to the captain
and I shake his hand,
I say, “Look-a here captain,
you got a hard workin' man.”

And I told the captain
Old Ben was dead
And the captain didn't do nothing
but nod his head.

So why don't you go down old Hannah,
don't you rise no more,
And if you do rise in the morning
change this world around.

TRAMONTA, SOLE FEROCE

Tramonta, sole feroce
E non sorgere più
E se te ne vieni su al mattino
Brucia tutto quanto ‘sto mondo

Tramonta, sole feroce
E non sorgere più
E se te ne vieni su al mattino
Brucia tutto quanto ‘sto mondo

Tramonta, sole feroce
E non sorgere più
E se te ne vieni su al mattino
Fa’ che sia il giorno del Giudizio

Sì, sono andato dal capo guardia
E gli ho stretto la mano,
Gli ho detto: “Guardami capo,
qui hai un uomo che lavora duramente”

E ho raccontato al capo
Che il vecchio Ben era morto
E il capo non ha fatto nulla,
ha solo scrollato la testa.

Allora, perché non tramonti, sole feroce
E non sorgi mai più?
E se te ne vieni su al mattino
Cambia tutto quanto ‘sto mondo

= "Hosanna in the highest", "Osanna nell'alto dei cieli" = The sun, il sole.

Versione di Harry Belafonte e Fred Hellerman dall’album “Swing Dat Hammer” del 1960.‎
GO DOWN OLD HANNAH

Oh, we call the sun ol' Hannah
Blazing on my head
Yes, we call the sun ol' Hannah
And her hair is flamin' red.‎

Why don't you go down, ol' Hannah?
Don't you rise no more
If you come up in the mornin'
Bring judgment sure ‎

Well I look at ol' Hannah
She was turnin' red
Well I look at my partner
He was almost dead

Said if you get lucky,
Or make it on your own
Please go down by Julie's
Tell her I won't be long

Kept sayin' I was a good man
But they drove me down
Yes, I was a good man,
But they drove me down

Well, it look like ev'rything
Ev'rything I do
Yes, it looks like ev'rything
I do is wrong
