American Pie

mc
The grave that they dug him had flowers
Gathered from the hillsides in bright summer colors,
And the brown earth bleached white at the edge of his gravestone.
He's gone.

When the wars of our nation did beckon,
A man barely twenty did answer the calling.
Proud of the trust that he placed in our nation,
He's gone,
But eternity knows him, and it knows what we've done.

And the rain fell like pearls on the leaves of the flowers
Leaving brown, muddy clay where the earth had been dry.
And deep in the trench he waited for hours,
As he held to his rifle and prayed not to die.

But the silence of night was shattered by fire
As guns and grenades blasted sharp through the air.
And one after another his comrades were slaughtered.
In morgue of marines, alone standing there.

He crouched ever lower, ever lower with fear.
"they can't let me die! the can't let me die here!
I'll cover myself with the mud and the earth.
I'll cover myself! I know I'm not brave!
The earth! the earth! the earth is my grave."

The grave that they dug him had flowers
Gathered from the hillsides in bright summer colors,
And the brown earth bleached white at the edge of his gravestone.
He's gone.

HAUTA

Haudalla, joka hänelle kaivettiin, oli kukkia,
vuorten rinteiltä pomittuja, kesän väreissä hehkuvia,
ja ruskea multa hänen hautakivensä juurella muuttui valkoiseksi.
Hän on poissa.

Kun kansakuntamme sotien torvet alkoivat soida,
mies tuskin kahdenkymmenen vastasi niiden kutsuun.
Ylpeänä uskossaan maahansa ja kansaansa
hän on poissa.
Mutta ikuisuus tuntee hänet, tietää, mitä olemme tehneet.

Ja sade valui helminä kukkien lehdille
muuttaen kuivan maan ruskeaksi mudaksi.
Ja syvällä juoksuhaudassaan hän odotti odottamistaan
ja rukoili kivääri kourassaan, ettei kuolema häntä veisi.

Mutta yön hiljaisuuden rikkoi aseiden jyly,
ja luodit ja kranaatit halkoivat ilmaa.
Yksi toisensa jälkeen hänen toverinsa kaatuivat
kuoleman kentillä, yksin, vain pelko seuranaan.

Yhä alemmas hän käpertyi, yhä syvemmin syleili maata.
»Älä anna minun kuolla, älä anna kuolla täällä!
Peitän itseni mudalla ja maalla.
Piiloudun niiden alle. Tiedän, etten ole rohkea.
Maa, maan povi, maan syli on oleva hautani.«

Straordinaria interpretazione, a dir poco commovente.

hope

"McLean, famous for his hits American Pie and Vincent (Starry, Starry Night), said he was "proud of George Michael for standing up for life and sanity".
"I am delighted that he chose a song of mine to express these feelings," he said in a statement.
"We must remember that the Wizard is really a cowardly old man hiding behind a curtain with a loud microphone.
"It takes courage and a song to pull the curtain open and expose him. Good luck George."."

Rap (Enjoy what you do?)" e del falsetto nel ritornello? Fantastico!

"Even though I was 7 it totally and utterly made an imprint on me (...) the terror of war and what the actual reality of it was. I think it's incredibly powerful if it can reach children (...). And I think that ultimately it says a lot about what music is for (...). The idea of something which was so early in my life, and so important, really was a cornerstone of the way I see war. To have the privilege to sing in this situation, and trying to help others to see war for what it is, is just amazing".

I never met George Michael but I wish I had. I would have thanked him for the beautiful performance of my song "The Grave" which he did to protest the invasion of Iraq and the disastrous war which he knew would follow and still continues. The authorities had everybody cowered in the shadows as we hoped for a '60s style protest which never materialized. George Michael was fearless and had a great artist's need to speak the truth even in cowardly times. We should remember what he did. I always will.
