Cantata Rossa

Cinquantatre giorni
tanto ci volle
perché con l'inganno
Tall el Zaatar
bruciando ardesse
Cinquantatre giorni
e ogni giorno
fuoco
e ogni giorno
fame
e ogni giorno
bombe
e ogni giorno
traditori
con carri armati
e con dollari
Cinquantatre giorni
e dietro alle croci
come una cagna impazzita
a urli
ogni giorno
la morte
a pezzi
a schegge
a frantumi
a tronconi
ogni giorno
la morte
contro un muro
d'occhi
contro un giro
di speranze
contro un cerchio
di mani e fucili
contro tutto un popolo
in piedi
ogni giorno
e per
cinquantatre giorni
come
una cagna
impazzita
a urli
tornò ogni giorno
la morte
prima che con l'inganno
Tall el Zaatar
bruciando ardesse
Con l'inganno
valorosi di Ashrafieh
massacratori di bambini
sciacalli delle macerie
tigri per sventrare le donne
con l'inganno
e dai loro palazzi
agitando trattati
Gemayel di numeri e banche
Chamoun il patriota
che difende bordelli
e notturno il prete Khassis
di medioevo e coltelli
mentre nell'angolo più sudicio
della vergogna
il due volte traditore
Assad
conta e riconta
il suo prezzo
con l'inganno
quel dodici
dodici
dodici
dodici agosto
che ancora ci duole sul cuore
fascisti in branco
di muso insanguinato
che si dicono cristiani
con l'inganno
entrarono
e agitando trattati
in Tall el Zaatar
tristi macellai
in nome dell'occidente civile
per rompere
squartare
saccheggiare
bruciare
sgozzare

to butcher
until
here and there
their peace
amongst the ruines
for a long long time went pecking
the wide open eyes of the dead

Note (English) from http://gstocchi.web.planet.it/la.htm

Tall el Zaatar, the Hill of Tyme, was a Palestinian refugee camp in the eastern zone of Beirut, in the Ashrafied neighborhood. It was controlled by the right-wing Libanese militia and the so-called Cristian gangs.

At the begining of the civil war, on the 10th of April 1974, between the Palestinian- Libanese Progressive Muslims Coalition on one hand and the Fascists right-wing Cristians on the other, the refugee camp, repeatedly bombed, never the less managed to resist for more than two years. It's final fate was marked by the treachery of the Sirian president Hafez el Assad. With the pretext of defending the palestinians, he circled his tanks around the camp. Fearing that a possible victory of the Libanese Progressive-Palestinian Coalition would change the equilibrium of the region, he there by supported the right-wing Libanese fraction.

For fifty-three days Tall el Zaatar was ferociously attacked, falling on the twelve of August in 1976 when the Falangists, who had on the previous day signed a seize- fire treaty, garanteed by the Sirians, entered the camp to evacuate the women and children and instead they committed a massacre where thousands of people died.

The young girls, who were saved from the massacre, were conducted to the army headquarters of Asharafieh as awards for the soldiers' heroism.

Tewfiq Zayadd, born in Nazareth where he governed the city as mayor untill his death in 1995, is considered to be one of the greatest Palestinian poets. His verses cited at the beginning are taken from fom one of his most famous poems, The diary of a bloody wedding. It was written after the Black September Massacre, when in 1970, the butcher at the moment, Re Hussein of Jorden, slaughtered at Amman thousands of palestinians to constrick their organization to leave his country.

Pierre Gemayel was the founder and the head of the Libanese Falangist Movement, an openly fascist political-military organization.

Camille Chamoun, a polititian and banker, was the head of the Libanese Tigers. His "soldiers" had images of Santa Rita of Cascia on their rifles.

Khassis was a maronite monk, who led one of the most ferocious "Cristian" armed gangs.
