Getting directly from the author a song that has been written by somebody who has really fought in Vietnam is for our website a honor still greater than hosting even the most beautiful song on such argument, but written by somebody who has neved left home. The story of a 18 yo boy getting going to war as the only alternative to being put in jail. So, we're happy to give this song the importance it deserves. It's an authentic song. [AWS / CCG Staff]

"My name is Walt Cronin. I'm a former Navy corpsman (medic) that served with a Marine platoon in Vietnam in 1970. I'm also a singer songwriter. Our first CD "The Gousters" (www.thegousters.com) has a song called Only Eighteen which is a composite of experiences of guys I served with. My new CD has the majority of songs relating to my war experiences and its aftermath after coming home. You can listen to the first CD on my website and if you would like I can mail a copy of the new CD (and the first) which is in its final completion phase. Please let me know if you may be interested in airing some of these songs or using them in some context. I'm also a friend of Bill McDonald from the Military Writers Society Association.

Thanks, Walt Cronin.

PS. I'm a member of Veterans for Peace."

Grazie, Walt Cronin.

Thanks to Walt Cronin for contributing his song to our antiwar website. [AWS/CCG Staff]
We was just kids
gettin' a hold on
gettin' a load on
searchin' our dreams.

We were just laughin'
at all that had happened
in our young short lives
not even begun.

It was the Sixties
nowhere to mix these
troubled emotions
that got me in jail.

No family to own me
I found myself lonely
got myself drafted
for being eighteen

I heard the judge sentence
It's Nam or detention
To the court I did mention
I was only eighteen.

In the time that I spent there
I never could dare share
the horror inside me
with the boys that I knew.

And when I did come back
There was only the dumb lack
of what I had seen there
that had made me unreal.

Over and over,
I'm livin it over
the loss and the horror
of what I have seen.

Only eighteen,
only eighteen
I've nurtured an illness
as deep as the stillness

That lives in my dreams
or so it may seem.
Deep in my night sweat
I never can forget

The lives that were forfeit
for being eighteen
only eighteen
only eighteen.

SOLO DICIOTT'ANNI

Eravamo solo ragazzi
sbattuti in galera
con un peso addosso
alla ricerca dei sogni.

Ridevamo soltanto
di tutto ciò che accadeva
nelle nostre giovani vite
non ancora iniziate.

Erano gli anni '60,
nessun posto dove mischiare
queste emozioni agitate
che mi portarono in prigione.

Non avevo una famiglia,
mi ritrovai solo
e mi ritrovai arruolato
perché avevo diciott'anni

Sentii la sentenza del giudice:
In Vietnam o in galera
E feci presente alla corte
che avevo solo diciott'anni

Nel tempo che ho passato là
Non ho mai osato condividere
l'orrore che avevo dentro
coi ragazzi che conoscevo.

E quando tornai a casa
c'era solo la sorda mancanza
di quel che avevo visto là
e che mi aveva reso irreale.

E ancora, e ancora
e ancora rivivo
la perdita e l'orrore
di quello che ho visto.

Solo diciott'anni,
solo diciott'anni
ho svilupatto una malattia
profonda come la quiete

Che vive nei miei sogni
o così può sembrare.
Quando sudo nel profondo della notte
non posso mai dimenticare

Le vite messe in gioco
perché avevamo diciott'anni
solo diciott'anni
solo diciott'anni.
