E i militari abbandonati e tristi
Destinazione ignota della storia
Odore di ferro e lavanderia
Aria di caserma e di follia
Ricordo i grandi e loro lunghi addii
E i fazzoletti bianchi

Bandiere rosse e nere
E poi ragazzi armati fino ai denti
Innocenti e sorridenti
Coscritti allegri cantano canzoni

Siamo stati fortunati

Chissà se alla tua prossima stazione
Ti aspetterà l’amore il grande amore
Pensieri lenti viaggianti in ferrovia

STATIONS

Stations stations stations
Air of war smoke and gas
The train is big it's an elephant
It takes people away
And the soldiers abandoned and sad
Unknown destination at the end of the story
Smell of iron and laundry
Air of barracks and folly
I remember the elders and their long goodbyes
And the white handkerchiefs
And us the boys flesh for cannons
Envying the station master
May be there's some coal to steal
Our black hands tight around the sacks
And then the run the breathless flight
To cheat the railways and the state

The train my friends is the king of the plains
It splits in two the country and the city
From the train the word is in profile
Every sequence has a pole and a wire
Who doesn't know the train and the stations
Will never know what Italy is
The Alps the pyramids and its seas
Body blood and capillaries
I still remember but I couldn't assure you
Red and black flags
And then boys armed to the teeth
Innocent and smiling
Cheerful conscripts sing songs
Youth Hitler Mussolini
They're all there there's the little Alps soldier too
And there is Lenin going from Moscow to Berlin

Stations stations stations
Everybody has seen nobody knows
Reserved slaughter wagons
On forgotten dead end tracks
We're at a stop it happened more than one our ago
This train is never arriving
There has been a break down a dirty trick
A poisoned bomb in the tunnel
We haste down to buy the newspaper
But everything is OK
We speak about something else the worst is over
We've been lucky

Who knows if at your next station
Love great love will be waiting for you
Slow thoughts traveling by railway
How fast is running this train that leaves
