Twice Around The Houses

This great protest song covering all forms of injustice, the lyric "we're locking up people without a trial hailed for their beliefs" gives a flavour of the song written not only at the time of the Vietnam war but also the height of the troubles in Northern Ireland

Jonathan can be seen singing a live version of the song which first appeared on his most famous album 'Twice Around The Houses'
Well once I was a pretty Boy Blue,
had my Church and family's blessing
But that is the part of me I find the most depressing
I was taught to think of myself as better than all the others But now the only thing I want is to stand up with my brothers, singin

We are the people, we are the proud (yes we are)
We are the people, and now won't you join the crowd
And be one of the people now,
Won't you be, one of the people now
They've got prisons for the criminals
The good in with the bad
Prisons for the old and lonely
Prisons for the mad
But now I hear the prisons walls
Are growing without relief
For locking up people without a trial
Jailed for their beliefs (but)

They are the people, they are the proud (yes they are)
We are the people, and now won't you join the crowd
And be one of the people now,
Won't you be, one of the people now
Do you hear the brass band playing
Do you hear the tramp of feet?
Twenty thousand working men
Are coming down the street

Will you listen to what they're saying
Will you listen to their song
One man may not be right
But can all of these be wrong? (Singing)

We are the people, we are the proud (yes we are)
We are the people, and now won't you join the crowd?
And be one of the people now,
Won't you be, one of the people now
We are the people, we are the proud
We are the people, and now won't you join the crowd?
And be one of the people now,
Won't you be, one of the people now
