Die Sonate vom Guten Menschen
(Gabriel Yared)
Lob des Lernens
(Bertolt Brecht)

[1920]

io tenni l'amor mio pallido e quieto

Geschwommen still hinunter und vorbei.

RICORDO DI MARIE A.

Un dì nel mese azzurro di settembre
quieto all'ombra d'un giovane susino

Dopo quel giorno molte e molte lune
con tante acque sono corse via.
Sono i susini già tutti recisi,
e dell'amore, mi chiedi, che fu?
E ti rispondo: non me ne ricordo.
Eppure, credi, so che cosa intendi:
ma quel suo viso, io, non lo so più.
Questo soltanto so: che la baciai.

E anche il bacio, l'avrei dimenticato
non fosse per la nuvola che andava.
Quella so ancora e sempre la saprò:
era assai bianca e mi veniva incontro.
Sono forse i susini ancora in fiore,
forse il settimo figlio già quella donna avrà.
Ma pochi istanti fiorì quella nuvola
e quando la cercai era già vento.

REMEMBERING MARIE A.

It was a day in that blue month september
Silent beneath the plum trees' slender shade
I held her there, my love, so pale and silent
As if she were a dream that must not fade
Above us in the shining summer heaven
There was a cloud my eyes dwelled long upon
It was quite white and very high above us
Then I looked up
And found that it had gone

And since that day, so many moons in silence
Have swum across the sky and gone below
The plum trees surely have been chopped for firewood
And if you ask, how does that love seem now
I must admit, I really can't remember
And yet I know what you are trying to say
But what her face was like, I know no longer
I only know I kissed it on that day

As for the kiss, I long ago forgot it
But for the cloud that floated in the sky
I know that still and shall forever know it
It was quite white and moved in very high
It may be that the plum trees still are blooming
That woman's seventh child may now be there
And yet that cloud had only bloomed for minutes
When I looked up, it vanished on the air

WSPOMNIENIE O MARII A.

Pamiętam go i będę już pamiętał –
Tak biały był i płynął tak wysoko.
Te śliwy może jeszcze teraz kwitną,
Owa kobieta może po raz siódmy matką.
Lecz obłok ten kwitł tylko minut parę,
A gdym wzniósł oczy, już unosił wiatr go.

MARIE A:N MUISTO

Syyskuussa kerran sinenkuultavassa
vaieten alla nuoren luumupuun
syliini suljin kainon lemmittyni
ja huulillani tunsin hennon suun.
Ja päämme päällä, taivaan kirkkaudessa
ui pilvi jota pitkään seurasin.
Se oli valkoinen ja ylettömän korkealla
ja häipyi pois kun sitä katselin.

On siitä nyt jo monen monta kuuta
hitaasti menneisyyteen vierinyt.
Kai luumupuut on kaadettu ja kysyt ehkä:
miten on rakkauteni laita nyt?
Ja vastaan näin: en muista sitä enää
vaan tiedän kyllä mitä tarkoitat.
Jos kasvot ovat poissa mielestäni,
enemmän muistan, muistan suudelmat.

Ja suudelmatkin unohtanut oisin
jos taivaalla ei ollut pilveä.
Sen muistan kyllä, muistan ikuisesti
niin vitivalkoisen niin ylhäällä.
Kukoistaa voivat vielä luumupuut;
on nainen ehkä äiti lapsen seitsemän.
Vain pilvi yksin kukki hetken verran,
kun katsoin ylös, näin sen häipyvän.

It's interesting how some texts inspire songmakers. I've been able to find at least three songs composed to Brita Polttila's Finnish translation of Brecht's poem written nearly a hundred years ago.

The first one was composed by Tapio Lipponen and performed by Muksut on their 1969 album Pienen pieni (Tiny Little): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UuLiAODreaA

The second version was composed by Pekka Tegelman and performed by Petri Pettersson on his 1979 single Marie A:n muistolle / Vieras (Remembering Marie A / The Stranger): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RufZjKVOUJ0

And last but not least, a version composed by Maija Ruuskanen and performed by Eeva Siljamäki and the Ruuskanen Railio Strings on their 2012 album Samassa unessa (In the Same Dream): http://antiwarsongs.org/canzone.php?la...
