He is my Brother

Antoni Słonimski
Language: English

List of versions

This man, who his own fatherland forgets
When of the shedding of Czech blood he hears,
Who, as a brother feels for Yugoslavia,
Who in the pain of Norway's people shares.

Who with the Jewish mother wrings his hands
In grief and bends with her above her slain.
Who Russian is, when Russia falls and bleeds,
And with Ukrainian weeps for the Ukraine.

This man, with heart to all compassionate,
French, when France suffers in captivity,
Greek, when Greeks in cold and hunger perish,
He is my brother - man. He is Humanity.

TEN JEST Z OJCZYZNY MOJEJ

Ten, co o własnym kraju zapomina
Na wieść, jak krwią opływa naród czeski,
Bratem się czuje Jugosłowianina,
Norwegiem, kiedy cierpi lud norweski,

Z matką żydowską nad podbite syny
Schyla się, ręce załamując żalem,
Gdy Moskal pada - czuje się Moskalem,
Z Ukraińcami płacze Ukrainy,

Ten, który wszystkim serce swe otwiera,
Francuzem jest, gdy Francja cierpi, Grekiem -
Gdy naród grecki z głodu obumiera,
Ten jest z ojczyzny mojej. Jest człowiekiem.

HÄN ON VELJENI

Hän jolta isäänmaa unohtuu,
kun hän kuulee tšekkien veren vuotavan,
joka veljen lailla suree Jugoslavian puolesta,
joka tuntee Norjan kansan tuskan;

joka ukrainalaisten kanssa itkee Ukrainan kohtaloa;

HE IS MY COUNTRYMAN

He, who forgets the country which he loves
on hearing how the whole Czech nation bleeds,
he who is brother to the Yugoslav,
Norwegian, when he Norway’s anguish heeds,

with the Jewish mother kneels, and with compassion
for her dead sons laments and shares her pain,
when falls the Russian – feels that he is Russian,
with Ukrainian suffers for Ukraine,

he, who his heart to everyone will bare,
is French when France is suffering, when the land
of Greece its sons sees starving in despair,
– he is my countryman. He is a Man.
