Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (January 15, 1929 – April 4, 1968)

Forty years ago today, Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. was tragically shot and killed at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis. King was in Memphis to lead that city's 1300 sanitation workers in a strike, eventually settled in favor of the workers, over the right to unionize. In the aftermath of the assassination, riots erupted in over 100 cities though somehow not in King's hometown of Atlanta. This page features a sampling of how the streets of Chicago looked after two days of tumult.

In 1991, the former Lorraine Motel was converted to the National Civil Rights Museum.

"They Killed Him" is a song written by Kris Kristofferson for his 1985 album Repossessed.
It is a tribute to his martyred personal heroes, Martin Luther King, Jr., Mohandas Gandhi, and Jesus. The song was covered a year later by Bob Dylan for his 1986 album Knocked Out Loaded.

There was a man named Mahatma Ghandi
He would not bow down, he would not fight
He knew the deal was down and dirty
And nothing wrong could make it right away

But he knew his duty, and the price he had to pay
Just another holy man who tried to make a stand
My God, they killed him!

Another man from Atlanta, Georgia
By the name of Martin Luther King
He shook the land like rolling thunder
And made the bells of freedom ring today

With a dream of beauty that they could not burn away
Just another holy man who dared to be a friend
My God, they killed him!

The only son of God Almighty
The holy one called Jesus Christ
Healed the lame and fed the hungry
And for his love they took his life away

On the road to glory where the story never ends
Just the holy son of man we'll never understand
My God, they killed him!

chiamato Martin Luther King
