“Chase The Devil”, tratto dallo storico album War Ina Babylon del 1976, è uno dei brani più iconici di Max Romeo, ampiamente campionato negli anni successivi — basti pensare a Out of Space dei Prodigy o a Lucifer di Jay-Z.
La canzone ha un forte valore simbolico: Max racconta la sua battaglia contro Lucifero, il figlio dell’aurora, deciso a cacciarlo dalla Terra. Per compiere la sua missione, si riveste di un’armatura di ferro.
In un’intervista rilasciata alla BBC nel 2010, Max Romeo ha spiegato che il diavolo rappresenta tutto ciò che c’è di negativo nella nostra mente, mentre l’armatura simboleggia la forza dello spirito, quella che ci permette di resistere e vincere le tentazioni interiori.
Ma nel contesto del reggae e della cultura rastafariana, il diavolo assume anche un significato politico: è la metafora del potere oppressivo, del colonialismo, dell’imperialismo. In questa chiave, “scacciare il diavolo” significa ribellarsi all’ingiustizia, opporsi con forza e consapevolezza a ciò che genera oppressione, sfruttamento e distruzione.
“Chase the Devil” è quindi una canzone che unisce spiritualità e resistenza.
