Testo e musica di Violeta Parra
Lyrics and music by Violeta Parra
Porque los pobres no tienen
adonde volver la vista,
la vuelven hacia los cielos
con la esperanza infinita
de encontrar lo que su hermano
en este mundo le quita.

¡Palomita!

¡Palombella!

Perché i poveri non hanno
dove volgere la voce,
la volgono verso i cieli
cercando una confessione
giacché i loro fratelli non ascoltano
la voce del loro cuore.

Perché i poveri non hanno
in questo mondo speranze,
si appoggiano all'altra vita
come ad un corrimano,
per questo le processioni,
le candele, le lodi.

Dai tempi immemori
in cui si è inventato l'inferno
per spaventare i poveri
con i suoi castighi eterni,
e il povero, che è innocente,
credendo con la sua innocenza.

Il cielo tiene le redini,
la terra e il capitale,
e ai soldati del Papa
li riempie bene il morale,
e a colui che lavora gli mettono
la gloria come una museruola.

Per proseguire la menzogna,
lo chiama il suo confessore,
gli dice che Dio non vuole
nessuna rivoluzione,
né sezioni né sindacati,
che offendono il suo cuore.

Versione inglese di David Anderson
English Version by David Anderson
Because the poor don't have
anywhere to turn their gaze
They turn towards the sky
With infinite hope
Of finding what their brother
In this world has stolen

Little dove!
Such things has life
Ay zambita!*

Because the poor don't have
Anywhere to turn their voice
They turn towards the sky
Seeking a confession
Since their brother doesn't listen
to the voice of his heart

Because the poor don't have
Any hope in this world
They shelter themselves in the other life
Like a scale of justice
Hence the processions,
The candles, the prayers

From time immemorial
Hell has been invented
To frighten the poor
With its eternal punishments
And the poor, who are innocent
Believing, in their innocence

Heaven has the power,
The land and the money
And the soldiers of the Pope
Stuff their bags full
And on the worker they put
salvation like a muzzle

To maintain the lie,
his confessor (the priest) calls him over
and says that God doesn't want
Any revolutions
Or strikes, or unions
Which offend His heart

* "Zamba": an Argentine dance
