Anonimo islandese
(1937)

einn fagran dag
á landið vort

Velkomnir voru
af öllu hjörtu
lönduðu einn dag,
einn fagran dag
á landið vort

Sögðu þeir gerast
jarðafræðilegar
förskunar einn dag,
einn fagran dag
á landið vort

En sendir voru
til að þeir bygðu
flugvélabönu
einn skálan dag
á landið vort

Voru þeir sendir
út af landi
með stórri skám
einn fagran dag
af landi voru

Settu þeir út,
einn fagran dag,
þeim var sagt nei,
á landið vort
styrjöld aldrei!

FALSI SCIENZIATI

Falsi scienziati,
ufficiali tedeschi
sbarcarono un giorno,
un bel giorno
sulla nostra terra

Fu dato loro
il benvenuto di cuore,
sbarcarono un giorno,
un bel giorno
sulla nostra terra

Dissero che avrebbero fatto
delle ricerche
geologiche un giorno,
un bel giorno
sulla nostra terra

Ma erano stati mandati
perché costruissero
una pista per aeroplani,
un brutto giorno
sulla nostra terra

Furono cacciati
via dal paese
con gran vergogna,
un bel giorno
dalla nostra terra

E partitrono
un bel giorno,
fu detto loro "no",
sulla nostra terra
la guerra mai!

In May 1937, a German “scientific delegation” was received to Iceland with great ceremony. Its official task was carrying out geological researches in the inner desert area of Óðáðahraun. Shortly after, however, some shepherds noticed strange things were happening and warned the authorities. It was soon discovered that the false “scientists” were Wehrmacht officers making surveys in order to mark out a landing strip for airplanes and a bridgehead for a possible invasion of the island, strategically essential for the war to come.
Though totally unarmed, Iceland's authorities expelled immediately the entire German delegation, confiscated all survey maps and instruments and asked official apology (and received it, incredibly enough) by Hitler's government.
Iceland's traditions include immediate composition of folksongs commenting on any event, a practice still living nowadays. This anonymous folksong was composed to the tune of a víkivaki (a type of Icelandic folkdance) and was inspired by that event. The song originated probably in the outskirts of Reykjavík. [RV]

FALSE SCIENTISTS

False scientists,
German officers
landed one day,
one fine day
to our country

They were given
a warm welcome,
when they landed one day,
one fine day
to our country

They said they'd carry out
geological researches
when they landed one day,
one fine day
to our country

But they had been sent
to build a landing strip
for airplanes,
that bad day when
they landed to our country

They were driven out
of our country
with great shame,
one fine day
out of our country

And so they left
one fine day,
we said them “no”,
in our country
no war shall there be!
