Bach a sua volta aveva ripreso la melodia dal compositore barocco Hans Leo Hassler che l'aveva scritta per la canzone Mein G’müt ist mir verwirret (1601)
Bruce Springsteen ha spesso affermato di aver passato gran parte della sua carriera di musicista a "misurare la distanza tra il sogno americano e la realtà americana". Anche questa bellissima canzone di Paul Simon, scritta nel 1973 all'indomani della rielezione di Nixon, cerca di fare i conti con questa distanza, forse incolmabile.
Quando Simon scriveva questa canzone gli Stati Uniti erano ancora impantanati nella guerra del Vietnam. E la il sogno americano di libertà e democrazia tradito viene simboleggiato dalla Statua della Libertà che prende il largo...
