Arne Paasche Aasen (1901-1978).
Arne Paasche Aasen (1901-1978).

[RV]

Written by Arne Paasche Aasen (the author, or rather the translator, of Vi bygger landet), it is said to have already been sung during World War II by Norwegian prisoners in German concentration camps; however, it was first published in print in 1945 (with Jolly Kramer-Johansen's tune) by Norsk Musikforlag. Most probably, composition actually took place during war years under German occupation and Vidkun Quisling's pro-Nazi puppet regime; as a matter of fact, Arne Paasche Aasen and Jolly Kramer-Johansen closely collaborated in writing songs for the Norwegian workers' organizations and the Resistance movement. Arne Paasche Aasen (1901-1978) was a prominent author and poet in his time; he was the son of the political activist and feminist Augusta Paasche (1878-1920), while his sister Emmy Pauline Paasche-Aasen was the wife of Paul René Gauguin, painter and sculptor, nephew of Paul Gauguin but Danish by birth and Norwegian by nationality. Arne Paasche Aasen was a multifaceted personage; a humorous poet and writer under the pen name of Dorian Red (evidently modeled on Dorian Gray, but with a ... change of color reflecting his political ideology), he was also the author of poems and songs for children (f.ex. he wrote the Norwegian lyrics to White Christmas, Min barndoms jul). Arne Paasche Aasen was said "to have been more important than Karl Marx for the Norwegian workers' movement". [RV]

A moving document:
Frihetens forpost sung in 1974 by some young men and women in Utøya.

Kamerater! Kamerater!

gjennom hverdagens trofaste virke
ryddet grunnen for arbeidets kår.

Kamerater! Kamerater!

Kamerater! Kamerater!

VAPAUDEN VIESTI

Näätkö siintävät salmet ja vuoret,
viljapellot ja tehtaat nuo?
Se on maamme ja voimamme, nuoret
sen kansalle vapauden tuo.
Sinä kuuletko laulua tuulen,
joka raikkaana korvissa soi?

Toverimme, toverimme,
kansanvaltainen Pohjola on.
Tarmollamme rakennamme
tämän maan, se on nuorison.

Monen katkeran taistelun tiellä
toisten sortuissa vastuksihin
työn nostivat arvohon hiellä
taatot yhteisin ponnistuksin.
Nyt turvalla järjestövoiman
astuu työläinen taistelohon.

Toverimme, toverimme,
kansanvaltainen Pohjola on.
Tarmollamme rakennamme
tämän maan, se on nuorison.

Katso, päivä jo nousevi tuolla,
säteet kirkkahat maan valloittaa.
Menneisyyden me annamme kuolla,
tulevaisuus vain voimamme saa.
Myrskyn siivillä maan yli lentää
vala tää, joka tuulessa soi:

Toverimme, toverimme,
kansanvaltainen Pohjola on.
Tarmollamme rakennamme
tämän maan, se on nuorison.

AN OUTPOST OF FREEDOM

Can you see the town, the slopes of homeland?
Can you see the rolling ridges and fells?
It's Norway, the land of people and future.
It's your land, the land that belongs to you.
Can you hear it sway towards you
like a song on an autumn night?

Comrades, comrades!
It's an outpost of freedom in the North.
We shall build, we shall secure,
we shall defend every inch of its soil.

This homeland is our greatest wealth.
This is where generations across centuries
with their steadfast actions
have prepared the ground for man to work.
This is where ancestors have labored and fought
for a future that's ours to enjoy now.

Comrades, comrades!
It's an outpost of freedom in the North.
We shall build, we shall secure,
we shall defend every inch of its soil.

Look, the day is breaking over lands,
light growing in gorges and valleys.
May it fill our mind and thoughts,
let us give it all our skill.
Can you hear it surge towards you,
the song that requires an answer now!

Comrades, comrades!
It's an outpost of freedom in the North.
We shall build, we shall secure,
we shall defend every inch of its soil.

Appartiene a te.
Senti che verso te ora ondeggia
Come un canto nella sera d'autunno.

Compagni! Compagni!
È avamposto di libertà qui nel Nord.
Costruiremo, proteggeremo,

Qui i padri han sofferto e lottato
Per un avvenire che adesso è nostro.

Compagni! Compagni!
È avamposto di libertà qui nel Nord.
Costruiremo, proteggeremo,

Compagni! Compagni!
È avamposto di libertà qui nel Nord.
Costruiremo, proteggeremo,
Difenderemo ogni centimetro del suo suolo.
