Between 1927 and 1931 Hiski Salomaa, who had immigrated to the USA in 1909, recorded 18 Finnish songs for Columbia Records. One of these was »Vapauden kaiho« which was originally commissioned from him by his labor union, the radical IWW (Industrial Workers of the World). Apart from one, all these recordings are available here: https://archive.org/details/FinnishWobblies

Finnish Wobblies

In terms of linguistics, Salomaa's songs are interesting in two ways: he sings in a broad east Finnish accent (Savonian dialect) and his lyrics often - not in this case, though - contain words that are called Finglish, a term originated by Martti Nisonen, professor at the Suomi College in Hancock, Michigan, in the 1920's and referring to a mixture of English and Finnish common among Finnish immigrants to North America.

According to Finnish music archives there are some 15 recorded versions plus a number of re-releases of the song. The samples include the original version from 1929 by Columbia Records, a political song movement version by Kom-teatteri from 1979, a marching band version by Tuomari Nurmio & Hugry Tribal Marching Band from 1992, a reggae version by Soul Captain Band from 2001, and a jazz(ish) version by Yötyöväen Orkesteri from 2010.
Meill' vapauden kaiho soi
ain' rinnassamme, toverit oi
Siks' yhteistyöhön rintamahan käy
pelastusta köyhille ei ennen näy

Viha, vaino pois
rauha parempi ois
Sopusointu keskenämme vallitkoon

Oi vapaus, kuule kutsua
sua itkevät orvot kaipaa
Olet köyhän kansan pelastus
siksi vapauslaulut raikaa

Vaikk' jo aamu armas sarastaa
ja aurinkoinen heijastaa
Mut nuo synkät pilvet varjostaapi viel'
ja jylhät vuoret ompi vapauden tiell'

Vaikka mustass' yöss'
veljen kättä kun lyö
niin pilvet haihtuu, kylmyys vaihtuu
tieltämme pois

Oi vapaus, kuule kutsua
sua itkevät orvot kaipaa
Olet köyhän kansan pelastus
siksi vapauslaulut raikaa

YEARNING FOR FREEDOM

The eyearning for freedom is echoing
forever in our chests, comrades
Thus come together and join the ranks
for that's the only salvation for the poor

Away with hate and persecution
Forwards to peace
and harmony among people

Oh, freedom, hear us calling
hear the voice of crying orphans
Oh, saviour of the poor people
hear the songs of freedom sounding

In the dawn of a new morning though
the blessing shine of the sun
is shadowed by dark clouds
and the way to freedom by high mountains

However dark the night
just grab the hand of your brother
and the clouds will disappear
and cold will give way to warm

Oh, freedom, hear us calling
hear the voice of crying orphans
Oh, saviour of the poor people
hear the songs of freedom sounding
