Hozier

Take Me To Church

“Sexuality, and sexual orientation - regardless of orientation - is just natural, an act of sex is one of the most human things. But an organization like the church, say, through its doctrine, would undermine humanity by successfully teaching shame about sexual orientation - that it is sinful, or that it offends God. The song is about asserting yourself and reclaiming your humanity through an act of love.”

“Coming from Ireland, obviously, there's a bit of a cultural hangover from the influence of the church. You've got a lot of people walking around with a heavy weight in their hearts and a disappointment, and that shit carries from generation to generation. So the song is just about that - it's an assertion of self, reclaiming humanity back for something that is the most natural and worthwhile. Electing, in this case a female, to choose a love who is worth loving.”

“Growing up in Ireland, the church is always there – the hypocrisy, the political cowardice. The video has the same theme – an organization that undermines humanity.”

My lover's got humour
She's the giggle at a funeral
Knows everybody's disapproval
I should've worshipped her sooner

If the heavens ever did speak
She's the last true mouthpiece
Every Sunday's getting more bleak
A fresh poison each week

'We were born sick, ' you heard them say it

My Church offers no absolutes
She tells me, 'Worship in the bedroom.'
The only heaven I'll be sent to
Is when I'm alone with you—

I was born sick,
But I love it
Command me to be well
Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen.

Take me to church
I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife
Offer me that deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life

Take me to church
I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife
Offer me that deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life

If I'm a pagan of the good times
My lover's the sunlight
To keep the Goddess on my side
She demands a sacrifice

Drain the whole sea
Get something shiny
Something meaty for the main course
That's a fine looking high horse
What you got in the stable?
We've a lot of starving faithful

That looks tasty
That looks plenty
This is hungry work

Take me to church
I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I'll tell you my sins so you can sharpen your knife
Offer me my deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life

Take me to church
I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I'll tell you my sins so you can sharpen your knife
Offer me my deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life

No Masters or Kings
When the Ritual begins
There is no sweeter innocence than our gentle sin

In the madness and soil of that sad earthly scene
Only then I am Human
Only then I am Clean
Amen. Amen. Amen.

PORTAMI IN CHIESA

avrei dovuto onorarla

se i cieli mai parlassero
lei è l’ultimo portavoce
ogni domenica diventa più cupo
un fresco veleno ogni settimana

“siamo nati malati” li senti dire

la mia Chiesa non offre assoluzioni
mi dice “prega in camera da letto”
l’unico paradiso al quale verrò spedito
è quando sono solo con te

sono nato malato
ma lo amo
ordinami di stare bene
amen, amen, amen, amen

portami in chiesa
offrimi quella morte senza morte

sembra gustoso
sembra un bel po’
è un lavoro affamato

portami in chiesa
offrimi quella morte senza morte

Amen, amen, amen, amen

portami in chiesa
offrimi quella morte senza morte
