Voglio mettere in evidenza il passaggio dedicato agli "Shankill Butchers" dall'articolo di Cerulli indicato sopra:
"[...] A quell'epoca l'Ulster Volunteer Force seminava il terrore anche a Belfast dove un intero settore, quello settentrionale che si estende da Ardoyne a New Lodge, rimase per lunghi anni ostaggio degli Shankill Butchers. I macellai di Shankill trascinavano le loro vittime nel retro di un pub lealista dove le macellavano con lunghi coltelli, accette o ganci da macelleria; un trapano elettrico veniva usato per trapassarne cuore e colonna vertebrale, due delle vittime sarebbero state sodomizzate con un martello pneumatico, mentre pinze e tenaglie venivano usate per strappar loro denti o unghie, chiodi e cucchiai per cavare loro gli occhi. Quasi tutte le vittime furono ritrovate con la testa recisa dal tronco e rivolta verso la schiena. Il leader dei Butchers, Lenny Murphy, fu giustiziato dall'IRA mentre undici macellai furono condannati al carcere a vita; essi sono tutti tornati in libertà, ben prima del rilascio dei prigionieri politici voluto dagli Accordi di Pace, senza aver scontato uno solo degli 89 ergastoli."

Dopo il terribile "Bloody Sunday" a Derry, il 30 gennaio 1972, l'IRA rispose il 21 luglio dello stesso anno facendo esplodere simultaneamente una ventina di bombe nella zona protestante di Belfast. Dieci furono i morti, decine i feriti. Fu il cosiddetto "Bloody Friday"... E' qui che inizia l'agghiacciante storia degli "Shankill Butchers" di Lenny Murphy, una banda di assassini efferati, legati ai gruppi paramilitari lealisti, che seminò il terrore nella comunità cattolica di Belfast a partire proprio dal 21 luglio 1972 e fino al 1977. Murphy e i suoi "butchers" rapirono e uccisero una ventina di cittadini cattolici, nessuno direttamente coinvolto nella azioni dell'Armata Repubblicana, sempre con inaudita crudeltà, torturandoli per ore o giorni a fil di coltello...
Murphy e i suoi vennero catturati, processati ma presto rilasciati. Un commando dell'IRA lo uccise nel 1983, sembra addirittura con il benestare e forse addirittura l'appoggio dell'Ulster Volunteer Force, il gruppo paramilitare lealista di cui Murphy faceva parte... persino i terroristi "ufficiali" erano imbarazzati dalla violenza che gli "Shankill Butchers" riuscivano ad esprimere!
La ferocia dei macellai di Murphy non venne mai dimenticata dalla comunità cattolica repubblicana, nemmeno dopo vent'anni: uno di questi, Robert Bates, fu rilasciato nel 1996 e fu trovato assassinato nel giugno dell'anno seguente.
