[1957]
The New Briton Gazette, Vol. 2”

The New Briton Gazette, Vol. 2 First Take

The first time ever I saw your face
I thought the sun rose in your eyes
And the moon and stars were the gifts you gave
To the dark and the empty skies, my love,
To the dark and the empty skies.

The first time ever I kissed your mouth
I felt your heart beat close to mine
Like the trembling heart of a captive bird
I thought that was there at my command, my love
I thought that was there at my command.

The first time ever I lay with you
I felt the earth move in my hand
I thought our joy would fill the earth
And last 'till the end of time, my love,
And last 'till the end of time.

AN CHÉAD UAIR

An chéad uair domsa do ghnúis ’fheiceáil,
id shúilese a scal an ghrian
Is do bhronn tú gealach agus bhronn tú réalt’
ar spéartha dú’ dorcha síoraí
A mhian

Is an chéad uair dúinne bheith beol le beol
Im' lámha bhí an domhan gan suan
Mar chroí ag preabadh, croí éin i gcás
Agus é ar ordú uaim

Is an chéad uair domsa im' luí led' thaobh
Nach cóngarach dom a bhí do chroí
Is bheadh ár lúcháir ar fud an domhain
Anois agus go síoraí
A mhian
An chéad uair domsa do ghnúis ’fheiceáil
