Harte Menschheit, unbewegt
Lang erfror'nem Fischvolk gleich
Doch das Herz bleibt schnell geregt
Und das Lächeln weich

AND THE TIMES ARE DARK AND FEARFUL‎

And the times are dark and fearful in the foreign town
Yet how light is every footstep and untroubled brow.‎
People frozen and impassive, like a fisher long at sea!‎
Yet these hearts are deftly managed and these smiles are free.‎

SYNKKIEN AIKOJEN SÄVELET

Jo synkkien aikojen sävelet
soivat toisessa kaupungissa
Vaan kevyet ihmisten askelet
ja huoletkin mielestä poissa
Maailma niin kova ja tunteeton
kuin kallio säiden pieksämä
Vaan ihmisten sydän on peloton
ja hymy kasvoillaan herkässä.

Versione italiana di Francesco Mazzocchi
E SONO I TEMPI BUI

E sono i tempi bui
nell’altra città
Ma resta con passo leggero
e la fronte è distesa
Umanità resistente, impassibile
come pescatori che il freddo indurisce
Ma il cuore rimane in veloce movimento
E il sorriso si fa dolce
