We're stole and sold from Africa
Transported to America
Like hogs and sheep we march in drove
Suffer the heat, endure the cold.
We're almost naked, as you see
Almost bare-footed as we be
Suffer the lash, endure the pain
Exposed to sun, both wind and rain.
See how they take us from our wives
Young children from their mother's side
They take us to some foreign land
Make slaves to wait on gentlemen.
Oh Lord, have mercy and look down
Upon the race of the African kind
Upon our knees pour out our grief
And pray to God for some relief..

Trascrizione del parlato del Rev. Robert Jones che presenta la sua interpretazione di "Stole and Sold From Africa" nel video sopracitato: "Songs That Healed a Nation with Reverend Robert Jones".
19:10 .... And the song comes from a woman by the name of Addie Graham.
Miss Graham was a white Kentucky woman who heard a lot of music as it passed by her farm.
She didn't play any instruments, so Mike [Seeger] took one of her songs and put it on the fiddle and on the harmonica.
And the song's called “ We're Stole and Sold from Africa”.
But strangely enough, the belief is that this was a white abolitionist hymn. Since black folks had to disguise the real meaning of their songs, white abolitionists didn't have to, and they could sing openly about their disgust for this thing called slavery.

"A cappella" music never sounded better. 4 part harmonies and some great writing. Like this original song called Stole and Sold. They were formal showcasing artists this year at NERFA. They are Lynn Mahoney Rowan, Will Thomas Rowan, Lauren Breunig, and Jeremy Carter-Gordon.

Internationally acclaimed folk band WINDBORNE (Vermont/Massachusetts) is a group of vocal chameleons who specialize in close harmony singing, shifting effortlessly between drastically different styles of traditional music within the same concert. Their musical knowledge spans many continents and cultures, but they remain deeply rooted in American folk singing traditions. Praised for “the purity of their voices, strength of their material, and attention to detail in their arrangements,” Lynn Mahoney Rowan, Will Thomas Rowan, Lauren Breunig, and Jeremy Carter-Gordon share a vibrant energy onstage – their connection to each other and to the music clearly evident. They educate as they entertain, telling stories about the music and explaining the characteristics and stylistic elements of the traditions in which they sing.
“The singers of the Windborne have a deep understanding, both musically and culturally, of the traditions from which they draw much of their repertoire. Their singing is a feast of a cappella harmony.”
Peter Amidon

Stole and Sold - Windborne - 2017
Stole and sold from Africa
Transported to America
Like hogs and sheep to march adrove
To bear the heat, endure the cold
See husbands taken from their wives
Small children from their mothers’ sides
All taken to some foreign land
Made slaves to wait on gentlemen
See how the officers gun them down
their only crime being black or brown
No more to wear the chains of slaves
But now the chains of jails and graves
Don’t close your eyes! Can’t you see
Oppression in our own country
Attend the cry and hear the wail
And fight for justice to prevail
Stole and sold from Africa
Transported to America
Like hogs and sheep to march adrove
To bear the heat, endure the cold
See husbands taken from their wives
Small children from their mothers’ sides

Trascrizione soggetta a correzioni del testo della canzone "Sold and Stole From Africa" nella interpretazione di Kristoffer Andrew Ross.
"We're Stole and Sold from Africa" was a traditional abolitionist song, written circa 1850. Collected from Addie Graham (1890-1978), Kentucky, USA. Windborne Singers wrote some excellent contemporary verses for their version on "Song on the Times." Due to potential copyright issues, however, I decided not to record those and tacked on two of my own.

SOLD AND STOLE FROM AFRICA
Sold and stole from Africa
Transported to America
Like hogs and sheep, march in droves
Suffer the heat and endure the cold
See husbands taken from their wives
Small children from their families
Taken to some foreign land
Made slaves to wait on gentlemen
And now condemned to death or poverty
To pain, to shame or indignity
To death in streets or lives in jails
Their children's fate whilst hate prevails
But now they march all across this land
Seeking justice on every hand
Seeking freedom in street and home
So shall, so shall we leave them to seek alone
So shall we let them seek alone
Sold and stole from Africa
Transported to America
Like hogs and sheep, march in droves
Suffer the heat and endure the cold
See husbands taken from their wives
Small children from their families
Taken to some foreign land

Addie's repertoire included several extremely common songs such as "We're Stole and Sold From Africa", an anti-slavery song which seems to have originated in the antebellum Abolitionist movement. She also sang a number of songs of African American origin, many of which she learned from black railroad builders..
