"It's a protest song that's a little different. Its lyrics are a chilling tale of what the world could become if man doesn't stop the wars, overdoing some technology and other social flaws."

"In the Year 2525" is a 1968 hit song by the American pop-rock duo of Zager and Evans. It reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for six weeks commencing July 12, 1969. It peaked at number one in the UK Singles Chart for three weeks in August and September that year. The song was written and composed by Rick Evans in 1964 and originally released on a small regional record label (Truth Records) in 1968. It was later picked up by RCA. Zager and Evans disbanded in 1971.

Zager and Evans were one-hit wonders, recording artists who had a number one hit and then never had another chart single. They did this in both the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Singles Chart and as of 2020, they are the only artists ever to have a chart-topping #1 hit on both sides of the Atlantic and never have another chart single in Billboard or in the UK for the rest of their career. Their follow-up single on RCA-Victor, "Mr. Turnkey", failed to enter the main music charts on either side of the Atlantic Ocean. Another single, "Listen to the People", managed to make the bottom slot of the Cashbox chart at number 100.

"In the Year 2525" opens with an introductory verse explaining that if mankind has survived to that point, he would witness the subsequent events in the song. Subsequent verses pick up the story at 1,010-year intervals from 3535 to 6565.[6] In each succeeding millennium, life becomes increasingly sedentary and automated: thoughts are pre-programmed into pills for people to consume, machines take over all work, resulting in eyes, teeth, and limbs losing their purposes, and marriage becomes obsolete since children are conceived in test tubes. Then the pattern as well as the music changes, going up a half step in the key of the song (chromatic modulation), after two stanzas, first from A-flat minor, to A minor.

For the final three millennia, now in B flat minor, the tone of the song turns apocalyptic: the year 7510 marks the date by which the Second Coming will have happened, and the Last Judgment occurs one millennium later. By 9595, with the song now in B minor, the Earth becomes completely depleted of resources, potentially resulting in the death of all life.

The song ends in the year 10,000. By that time, man has become extinct. But the song notes that in another solar system (or universe), the scenarios told in the song may still be playing out, as the beginning of the song repeats and the recording fades out.

The song was recorded primarily in one take in 1968, at a studio in a cow pasture in Odessa, Texas. Members of the Odessa Symphony also participated in the recording.

Personnel
Denny Zager & Rick Evans – acoustic guitars & vocals
Mark Dalton – bass guitar
Dave Trupp – drums
The Odessa Symphony – additional instruments
Tommy Allsup – producer
The record had regional success so RCA picked it up for a national release. Record producer Ethel Gabriel was tasked with enhancing the sound and arrangement. The track went to number 1 on the U.S. charts within three weeks of release.

The overriding theme, of a world doomed by its passive acquiescence to and overdependence on its own overdone technologies, struck a resonant chord in millions of people around the world in the late 1960s. The song was #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart during the Apollo 11 moon landing.

The song has been covered at least 60 times in seven languages and was included in a Clear Channel memorandum, distributed by Clear Channel Communications to every radio station owned by the company, which contained 165 songs considered to be "lyrically questionable" following the September 11, 2001, attacks.

In a later Zager and Evans song, "Yeah 32" (1970), the group sing about writing a song called "In the Year 2525 or something like that/and if it sells, then I'll do well and pay this woman back". ("Yeah 32" was released as the B-side of "Help One Man Today", which like all of their post-"2525" releases failed to chart in the US or the UK.)

The song is parodied as "In the Year 252525" in the seventh episode of Futurama's sixth season, "The Late Philip J. Fry", as Fry, Professor Farnsworth and Bender travel forwards through time to find a period in which the backwards time machine has been invented. A re-tooled version was used as the theme song for the TV series Cleopatra 2525, set aptly in the year 2525.

- fr.wikipedia

"In the Year 2525" (Exordium and Terminus) on yhdysvaltalaisen Zager & Evans -duon kappale ja menestyssingle vuodelta 1969. Se nousi listaykköseksi ainakin Yhdysvalloissa, Isossa-Britanniassa, Kanadassa, Alankomaissa, Norjassa ja Sveitsissä myyden maailmanlaajuisesti noin neljä miljoonaa kappaletta. Laulun science fiction-vaikutteinen sanoitus arvuuttelee ihmiskunnan tilaa seuraavien tuhansien vuosien aikana.

Laulun nimeen liitetään usein suluissa sanat Exordium & Terminus (suom. Johdanto ja päätepiste.)

Denny Zager ja Rick Evans olivat soittaneet yhdessä vuodesta 1962, jolloin he kuuluivat samaan The Eccentrics -nimiseen yhtyeeseen. Kaksi vuotta myöhemmin Evans sävelsi kappaleen ”In the Year 2525”, mutta se levytettiin vasta marraskuussa 1968, jolloin hetkellisesti erossa olleet Zager ja Evans olivat ryhtyneet esiintymään duona.

Suuren promootion siivittämänä ”In the Year 2525” ilmestyi kesäkuun lopussa 1969 ja jo 12. heinäkuuta se oli noussut Yhdysvaltain Billboard-listan kärkeen. Piikkipaikalla se pysyi seuraavat kuusi viikkoa. Britanniassa kappale nousi listalle 9. elokuuta ja listaykköseksi 30. elokuuta. Kärkipaikkaa se piti Britanniassa puolestaan hallussaan kolme viikkoa.

”In the Year 2525”:n jälkeen Zager & Evans ei onnistunut enää saavuttamaan minkäänasteista menestystä. Ainoastaan samana vuonna julkaistu studioalbumi 2525 (Exordium & Terminus) onnistui nousemaan Yhdysvaltain listalla sijalle 30.

Sävellyksessä on kaksi puolen sävelasteikon modulaatiota.

Suomenkielisen version julkaisi samana vuonna Robin. ”Vuonna 2525” nousi elokuussa 1969 Suomen listan sijalle 7.

Ruotsiksi kappaleen lauloi nimellä ”Anno 2202” Lenne Broberg (1969) ja italiankielisen version ”Nel 2023” tulkitsi Caterina Caselli (1970).

In the year 2525
If man is still alive,
If woman can survive,
They may find...

In the year 3535
Ain't gonna need to tell the truth, tell no lies.
Everything you think, do, and say
Is in the pill you took today.

In the year 4545
Ain't gonna need your teeth, won't need your eyes.
You won't find a thing to chew.
Nobody's gonna look at you.

In the year 5555
Your arms are hanging limp at your sides.
Your legs got nothing to do.
Some machine, doing that for you.

In the year 6565
Ain't gonna need no husband, won't need no wife.
You'll pick your son, pick your daughter too,
From the bottom of a long glass tube.

In the year 7510
If God's a comin' he ought to make it by then.
Maybe he'll look around himself and say,
"Guess it's time for the Judgment day?''

In the year 8510
God's gonna shake His mighty head.
He'll either say "I'm pleased where man has been.''
Or tear it down and start again.

In the year 9595
I'm kinda wondering if man's gonna be alive.
He's taken everything this old earth can give.
And he ain't put back nothing...

Now it's been 10,000 years.
Man has cried a billion tears.
For what he never knew
Now man's reign is through.
But through eternal night,
The twinkling of starlight,
So very far away
Maybe it's only yesterday?

In the year 2525
If man is still alive
If woman can survive
They may find.....

- Alberto Truffi: Musica e Memoria

In quel momento l’uomo avrà paura,
Avrà paura di morire, uoh uoh

Nel 6023, 23
Adesso io mi domando se,
Se nell’uomo ancora esisterà
Tutto quello che adesso ha, uoh uoh

Diecimila anni son passati,
E l’uomo crede di aver raggiunto Dio,
D' avere in mano il modo
Di conquistare il sole

Ma se ti volti indietro
Le rose sono vive
La pioggia cade ancora
Le cose belle sono antiche...

Nel 6033, 33
Io non ci sarò più,
Ma tu mi cercherai nell’infinito...

Nel 6033, 33
Io non ci sarò più,
Ma tu mi cercherai nell’infinito...

"L'an 2005" - The French version (by Boris Bergman) performed by Dalida and Richard Anthony [1969]

A quoi ça sert
Qui y aura-t-il à aimer?
Et qui pourra te regarder?

En l'année 5005 de notre ère
La vie est un désert
Nous n'avons plus rien à faire
La machine a le feu vert
Oh oh oh

Oh oh

Vuonna siis kakskytviis kakskytviis
Jos henkiinjäänyt ois
Nyt nainen taikka mies, niin he ties

Vuonna siis kolkytviis kolkytviis
Kummasti tosiin valheisiin usko pois
Ajatukset sun, sanatkin
Ties reikäkortti paremmin

Vuonna siis nelkytviis nelkytviis
Ravintoliuostaan tenavat saa
Nyt pillillään maiskuttaa
On hammasharja tarpeeton

Vuonna siis viiskytviis viiskytviis
Ei kädessäs känsää näy
Ja askel on hervoton
Puolestas moottori käy

Vuonna siis kuuskytviis kuuskytviis
Ei ole syytä toistaan ees rakastaa
Kun tyttäret, pojat, valmistaa
Koeputki sarjatyönä vaan

Vuonna siis sata ja viis on
Jo armonaika loppunut sun onneton
Hyvät kun mukanansa luoja vie
Henkiin jos jäänyt yhtään lie

Vuonna siis sataviis nää
Luojan sanat maata järkyttää
"Tää saaste muka munko luoma ois?"
Näin lausui Luoja, Haihtui pois

Vuonna siis sataviis kymmenen
Maanpäällä muutama kai vielä elää ihminen
Hän kaiken maasta sai ottaa itselleen
autioks' sai maan ja veen

Jälkeen vuotten tuhanten
Miljardien kyynelten
Niin perin turhien
Valta ihmisen
On kumottu jo kait
Vaan säilyy luonnonlait
Koin kuulas tähti tuo
Vain valon himmenevän luo

Vuonna siis kakskytviis kakskytviis
Jos henkiinjäänyt ois
Nyt nainen taikka mies, niin he ties

Vuonna siis kolkytviis kolkytviis
Kummasti tosiin valheisiin usko pois
Ajatukset sun, sanatkin
Ties reikäkortti paremmin
