Breton lyrics and French adaptation by François Stéphan (« Eostik Kreisker »)
Performed by M.me Castel, author’s daughter
Pianola accompaniment by Bernard Baudriller

Among the many people who carried out an intense activity in favour of Guillaume Seznec after his trial and conviction, was the young poet François Stéphan of Saint-Pol-de-Léon, writing under the pen-name of « Eostik Kreisker » (i.e. « Kreisker Nightingale » -The Kreisker, meaning « Downtown » in Breton, is a famous bell-tower right downtown Saint-Pol-de-Léon).

In 1932, aged 28, François Stéphan writes a song in Breton, a typical « gwerz » bearing the title of « Justiz evit Seznec ! », « Justice for Seznec ! ». The song is printed on a broadside and becomes soon so widely known, that a French adaptation is judged necessary by the author. Though properly bearing the title of « Justice pour Seznec ! », this French version appears as « Seznec est innocent ! » in Tri Yann’s album and we keep this title. It is movingly performed in the album by M.me Castel, François Stéphan’s daughter, accompanied by Bernard Baudriller at the pianola.

The song was dedicated by François Stéphan to the memory of Marie-Jeanne Seznec, who died in previous year, and of Seznec’s daughter, died 1930 aged 21. But it is also a tribute to the struggle carried out by the journalist Emile Petitcolas and judge Victor Hervé.

François Stéphan was born in 1904 and was a poet, in Breton and French, and a songwriter. He met a tragic and untimely death : as a member of French Resistance, he was arrested by Gestapo in June 1944 and shot in Brest in July of the same year.

E potrà quindi, senza temere alcun rimprovero,

SEZNEC IS INNOCENT !
(Justice for Seznec !)

It will be soon two years, since, with independence
and with all the good faith of the good and the honest
a serious journalist, valiant and full of hope
is leading a long and hard struggle for justice.

The goal of this struggle is saving from penitentiary
a man who languishes there, an innocent martyr
and retrial by means of a press campaign
of a miscarriage of justice just like many others.

Justice commanding us is not infallible,
sometimes it shows it is unable to do the right.
So look what happened in Ingrandes and Rennes,
it sought everywhere, but could not find anything.

A counter inquiry has been carried out
in our Finistère for postman Herriquet.
He was not guilty ! This has been proved,
he came back home, but was not reinstated !

Still, Bissonnier was convicted to languish
in penitentiary on false testimony.
He came back one fine day, but for all this
he had to pay his tearworn eyes : blind forever.

And also before these facts, the heroic writer
leading since two years the struggle for Seznec,
has not lost his faith, and prays expecting justice
despite of all infamous acts and unjust verdicts.

He is supported by the League for Rights of Man
that also took Seznec’s side and claims his innocence.
You can never say you don’t love this League
but now you have to stand and applaud !

For, when Justice itself is in question
the colour of its pleader is not important at all,
be he blue or red, be he white, black or yellow
Justice stands above all, simply Justice !

That is why, one day that hopefully comes soon,
Justice will give Seznec back to his children
so that, without fear of being reproached,
he can see again her old mother aged eighty two.

The sun of Justice will shine on the gravestone
of the woman who did all her duty,
his beloved wife, who in her last moments
left her grandchildren all her hope !

And the sun of Justice will also shine on the grave
of Seznec’s eldest orphaned daughter,
the humble Sister who sacrificed her life
for her father, whom she loved so much.

Buon lavoro.
