Easter Mourning

Henry Snow
Language: English

When I was a child I learned about Jesus,
He said he came to teach us peace.
He said he brought one simple message,
That would end violence and make all hatred cease.

He showed us how to love one another,
Even those we call our enemy,
He showed us that we could forgive
For we are all part of the same family tree.

He taught us all about compassion,
And what the way of love is worth,
He said that meekness is a virtue,
And that the meek shall inherit the earth.

All my life I’ve watched with anger, as our leaders claimed high moral ground.
They said nowhere but in America, could such righteousness be found.
Yet it’s been full forty years now, since the days of Viet Nam,
We’re still asking the same question, tell us please, who would Jesus bomb?

Now that I am grown I listen to our leaders,
Who claim that they are men of God,
But there’s nothing about their method
That rings true to the things that I was taught.

I guess I must have missed the lesson,
When Jesus taught about revenge,
And I don’t remember when he told us
To put our trust in money and in guns.

I don’t know how they call themselves Christian
When they take food away from the poor,
Or send children into battle,
Just to even up the score.

All my life I’ve watched with anger, as our leaders claimed high moral ground.
They said nowhere but in America, could such righteousness be found.
Yet it’s been full forty years now, since the days of Viet Nam,
We’re still asking the same question, tell us please, who would Jesus bomb?

They speak words like peace and truth and justice,
Words like freedom and liberty,
But words mean nothing if they justify oppression,
Bringing death and chaos to the lives they reach.

If Jesus walked the earth this morning,
Now people look into your heart,
And tell me if you think that there’s a war
That the good Christ Jesus would start.

Do you think he’d take an army over,
Where the Arabs live and lead the attack?
Should he bring about the death of millions
So we can super-size our fries and eat Big Macs?

All my life I’ve watched with anger, as our leaders claimed high moral ground.
They said nowhere but in America, could such righteousness be found.
Yet it’s been full forty years now, since the days of Viet Nam,
We’re still asking the same question, tell us please, who would Jesus bomb?

Yet perhaps there is one little lesson,
From both Christ and our leaders today,
That those words will only have any meaning,
If the deeds of those who speak them light the way.

How can it make someone a Christian
Killing children so their wealth increase,
And when did Jesus teach that torture
Would bring the world to a state of peace?

Jesus didn’t teach us to seek vengeance,
Or show us that greed was good,
And he never advocated using weapons,
So I think that they misunderstood.
