Listen Old Soldier
Wherever you are
The hills or the valleys
Come near or come far
They say youth is a treasure
We waste when we're young
So come down from that place
Where your medals are hung
You're forever returning
And yearning to fight
And you feel just like
An Old Soldier tonight...

Listen Old Soldier
'Cause time doesn't wait
The moon's on your shoulder
And the hour is late
And something there inside
Still calls out to you
And you won't fade away
Whatever you do
You're forever beginning
Barely winning the fight
You feel just like
An Old Soldier tonight...

You're not getting no younger
That much is true now
But you still got that hunger
Burning in you now
So what do you do now?

(What do you do now?)

Listen Old Soldier
To the sound in your ears
Of too many battles
Of too many years
But there's only one thing
You've learned in defeat:
That losing is bitter
And victory is sweet
Yeah you're always unravelling
Travelling light
And you feel just like
An Old Soldier tonight
You feel just like
An Old Soldier tonight

(that's right)

Just an Old Soldier...

Versione italiana di Kiocciolina
VECCHIO SOLDATO

Ascolta, Vecchio Soldato
Ovunque tu sia
Le colline o le valli
Si avvicinano o si allontanano
Dicono che la gioventù sia un tesoro
Noi abbiamo gettato via la nostra quando eravamo giovani
Perciò scendi da quel posto
Dove sono appese le tue medaglie
Stai sempre ritornando
E desiderando ardentemente di combattere
E ti senti proprio come
Un Vecchio Soldato stanotte...

Ascolta, Vecchio Soldato
Perché il tempo non aspetta
La luna è sulla tua spalla
E l'ora è tarda
E qualcosa là dentro
Ancora ti chiama
E tu non svanirai
Qualcunque cosa tu faccia
Stai sempre cominciando
Vincendo la lotta di poco
E ti senti proprio come
Un Vecchio Soldato stanotte...

Non otterrai di tornare di nuovo più giovane
E' tutto vero ora
Ma hai ancora quella fame
Che brucia in te, ora
Perciò cosa farai adesso?

(Cosa farai adesso?)

Ascolta, Vecchio Soldato
Il suono nelle tue orecchie
Di troppe battaglie
Di troppi anni
Ma c'è solo una cosa
Che hai imparato dalla sconfitta:
Che perdere è amaro
e la vittoria è dolce

Si ti stai districando
Luce viaggiatrice
E ti senti proprio come
Un Vecchio Soldato stanotte
Ti senti proprio come
Un Vecchio Soldato stanotte

Solo un Vecchio Soldato...

Una bella versione è quella cantata da David Crosby in "Thousand Roads" del 1993, in cui peraltro lo stesso Marc Cohn suona il piano.
