Marchin'

Colin Cromie
Language: English

[2004]
Songwriter: Colin Cromie

This song was written in 2004 in response to the revelations of Abu Ghraib and Fallujah. 'Other events and images of the time are alluded to, yet not mentioned explicitly. This symbolism within the song makes it as potent today as when it was written, especially with Lebanon in mind – or any current hotspot. The soul of this song lives eternally. And it is always immediately topical with the slight change of a line - in the tradition of great protest songs.'
Marchin', marchin', marchin' – This you do is wrong.
Marchin', marchin', marchin' – Join our song .
And march along.
We march to tell the soldier:
"This you do is wrong."
He only has ears for his general;
He dare not join our song.
So we march to tell the general:
"This you do is wrong."
He only has ears for his master;
He dare not heed our song.
So we march to tell the master,
"This you do is wrong."
He only has ears for his Angel of Death;
He will not hear our song,
He will not hear our song…

Marchin', marchin', marchin' – This you do is wrong.
Marchin', marchin', marchin' – Join our song .
And march along.
We march to mourn the massacred:
The young, the old, the lame,
Every one who fought the good fight
Our end is all the same.
And we march to comfort the mother
Where the flag lies in shame
Across the body she cries for
Our end is all the same.
And we march with souls uplifted
To end the tyrant's reign;
Our forces grow in killing fields
Our end is all the same,
Our end is all the same... C'om on yeh

Marchin', marchin', marchin' – This you do is wrong.
Marchin', marchin', marchin' – Join our song.
And march along.
We march when we are sightless,
In manacles and chains.
In meeting halls and prison cells,
The foe has many names.
And we march when we are beaten,
Broken, burned and maimed.
They only follow orders:
The foe has many names.
And we march when we are naked.
Our wills shall not be tamed
By the might of all the mindless
The foe has many names,
The foe has many names.

Marchin', marchin', marchin' – This you do is wrong.
Marchin', marchin', marchin' – Join our song .
March along.
We marched when Cain slew Abel;
The path we've worn is long:
Across the bloody centuries
Still we march along.
We march along these trails of tears
For the home where we belong,
The home we'll never see again –
Still we march along.
And we march when are hobbled,
Though we dare not whisper our song..
We are few in number
Still we march along,
Still we march along.

Marchin', marchin', marchin' – This you do is wrong.
Marchin', marchin', marchin' – Join our song
And march along.
So, march to tell your masters,
"This you do is wrong."
When they only have ears for the Angel of Death,
Join our song
and march along. – Come on
Marchin', marchin', marchin' – This you do is wrong.
Marchin', marchin', marchin' – Join our song .
And march along. C'm on
Marchin', marchin', marchin' – This you do is wrong.
Marchin', marchin', marchin' – Join our song .
And march along…
