Siren was Kevin Coyne's first recorded band.
In 1964, Nick Cudworth and Kevin Coyne (respectively 17 and 20) meet at Derby Art College. Coyne makes a big impression on the young Cudworth during a "Blues Hoot" where his singing and harmonica "stopped everyone in their tracks". They began to regulary jam together, Nick on piano and acoustic guitar, and play regular lunchtime performances in the lecture theatre of the school. Coyne leaves school at the end of 1964. The two meet again in 1967 when Nick visits the Whittingham Mental Hospital near Preston where Kevin works. They start to work together on what would become Siren's first songs.
