It's Not Our War

Music and Lyrics by Rich Pulin

"On august 2nd 1964, an American ship, the USS Maddox, was allegedly attacked, by the North Vietnamese in the gulf of Tonkin.this alleged attack led president Johnson to solicit congress for a declaration of war against the North Vietnamese, which was granted. shortly thereafter, both the first army and first marine divisions (50,000 men) were sent to Viet Nam and put on active duty. Prior to this event, the United States military involvement was restricted to only military advisors. president Kennedy planned on withdrawing those advisors before he was assasinated. Years later, the captain of the uss Maddox, John J. Herrick, confessed that his ship was never attacked and that he had fabricated most of the story to cooperate with the Johnson administrations efforts to accelerate the conflict into all out war. Today's "Tonkin" is "weapons of mass destruction"...and... (continuer)

Bring The Boys Back Home

Bring The Boys Back Home
Dall'album / From the album "The Wall" (1979)

Per un'introduzione all'album, vedi Another Brick In The Wall Part I
For an introduction to the album, see Another Brick In The Wall Part I

And progress he does continuing with the war-themed "Bring The Boys Back Home," a hymn-like chant that Roger Waters calls "the central song on the whole album" (1979 interview). Similar to the narrative alteration with the summary... (continuer)

Music by Hanns Eisler

Da / From / De: paroles.net

The following is the version as originally performed by Marcel Mouloudji, with all the changes Boris Vian and Marcel Mouloudji themselves had been constantly making to get through the censorship imposed by French authorities; it was all in vain. So, the following lyrics are exactly what the station “Europe 1” did broadcast on March 4, 1954, the historic date on which the song was transmitted... (continuer)

Le déserteur

Le déserteur

My Country 'Tis Of Thy People You're Dying

My Country 'Tis Of Thy People You're Dying
(1966)

"My Country 'Tis of Thy People You're Dying" is Buffy Sainte-Marie's statement-in-song about Indian affairs.

"My point in the song is that the American people haven't been given a fair share at learning the true history of the American Indian. They know neither the state of poverty that the Indians are in now nor how it got to be that way. I try to tell the side of the story that's left out of the history books, that can only be found in the documents, the archives and in the memories of the Indians themselves."

«As I sat and watched the horror unfold on 9/11, I could smell the acrid smoke drifting south from the Pentagon. There was a never ending line of cars heading away from Washington. With the rest of the world I watched the towers come down and among the victims were 343 New York firemen. Travelin' Soldier

Travelin' Soldier
Bloodshed ruins everything, especially life's simplest pleasures, like chatting with a stranger. This 2002 track finds the Chicks speaking their mind by illustrating the kind of void war leaves in so many lives.

“'Travelin’ Soldier',the current single by the Dixie Chicks, is the most powerful anti-war record of the moment. Partly that’s because it’s the one now being heard by the most people. But it’s also because the song, written by Bruce Robison, doesn’t look away from war’s inevitable human costs. A high school girl falls in love with a boy who is eventually shipped to Vietnam. From/da "Songs For John Doe"

The third verse refers to Vito Marcantonio, a Congressman from East Harlem who supported radical causes.
Financier J. P. Morgan symbolized the capitalist evils of the 'money trust' that gave major corporations and financial institutions enormous political clout.
Republican Wendell Wilkie unsuccessfully ran against Roosevelt in the November 1940 Presidential campaign. Although supported by many isolationists, Wilkie generally agreed with Roosevelt's foreign policy.

Plow Under
La canzone che chiude il controverso album 'Songs for John Doe' (vedi Ballad Of October 16th) è l'ironica "Plow Under" (Sotterrali), la quale mette a confronto una tattica del controverso New Deal Roosveltiano ,l'Agricultural Adjustment Association con le inevitabili conseguenze di una guerra non voluta.

'Songs for John Doe' (see also Ballad Of October 16th) closed with the sardonic 'Plow Under.' It compares a controversial policy of Roosevelt's first New Deal agency, the Agricultural Adjustment Association, to the inevitable casualties of an unwanted war.

Liza Jane

Liza Jane
Un'altra canzone dall'album "Songs for John Doe" (vedi Ballad Of October 16th). Chiaramente isolazionisti, i contenuti dell'album vennero in seguito ritrattati da Seeger e compagni.

"Liza Jane", another hoedown with alternating vocals by Seeger, White and Lampell, opens with a traditional verse but quickly moves into its isolationist message. One source credits Woody Guthrie as composer of this parody; Seeger remembers writing "Liza Jane," "Plow Under" and "Billy Boy" with Lee Hays on Helen Simon's apartment floor in early February 1941.
