Take This Hammer

Take This Hammer
Prison Worksongs.
Recorded by Dr. Harry Oster at the Louisiana State Penitentiary , Angola, La. and other locations, mostly in 1959.

Take This Hammer,
Guitar Welch, lead; Hagman Maxey, and Andy Mosely.

In his usually eloquent and colorful way, Roosevelt Charles described the sort of situation which must have originally goaded a prisoner into making up this song: "This was when the train was rollin' down the track of Angola. They had a railroad runnin' around about. They had a railroad gang there and they had quite a few hammers on the line. There was a boy he had been roll and roll, sometime he'd be up through the night through the day. The sun was shinin' hot in the month of August you know that it's a very hot month. An' the sweat was beginnin' to roll along and he call the water boy and the water boy he refuse. He call for the boss and the boss turned his back. So the boy he laid his hammer on the spike and he begin to strike on the spike and these are the words he said:

Guantanamo Blues

January 11, 2015 marks 13 years since the opening of US detention
facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Supporters of human rights and due process are today joining together from all corners of the world to mark the event in the form of protests and peaceful actions. In Australia, Dr. Aloysia Brooks, torture prevention advocate, and songwriter and human rights advocate, Les Thomas, have released the song ‘Guantanamo Blues’, and included an open letter (below) to President Barack Obama calling for him to close Guantanamo, restore due process and human rights.

The song was written to raise awareness about the ongoing situation of those detained in the facility. Most of the 127 prisoners that remain have been cleared for release, but remain imprisoned without charge or trial. An unknown number of men are participating in a hunger-strike to protest their ongoing detention... (Continues)

(Continues)

Lomax wrote: “ This song rises out of the dawn or dusk of a long work day, before rhythmic labor has begun, when tools are being readied or after the day’s work is over…..
The expression “ murder’s home “ has triple strenght, meaning the home of murder – the home of murderes and the murderer’s home .” (Genius )

Prisoner's Talking Blues

Prisoner's Talking Blues
1956, Robert was gigging at a juke-joint when he shot a man dead; he was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in Angola State Penitentiary. Blues researchers were seeking out the originators of the Blues all over the South and prisons were thought to be a fertile source. Robert was recorded in Angola and the tracks like ‘ Prisoner’s Talking Blues’, ‘Pardon Denied Again’ and ‘Angola Penitentiary Blues’ are heart-rending examples of the Blues born out of confinement.

If country Blues is about lamenting a hard life, with poverty, violence, illiteracy, jail-time and betrayal by your woman, then Robert Pete Williams certainly lived that life. Despite being an endlessly inventive guitarist and a desperately soulful singer, Robert was never a big selling artist, but his appearances at Blues Festivals around the world opened a window on the origins of the Blues. The pain in his voice and... (Continues)

PRIGIONIERI POLITICI MAPUCHE ANCORA IN HUELGA DE HAMBRE

Gianni Sartori

(Continues)

Nine Hours

Nine Hours
2018
Once Upon A Time In Ireland

‘Nine hours’ is again an incredible song where Ciaran, in jail for Republican activities, is given nine hours compassionate leave to attend the funeral of his father. During the song Ciarán recalls childhood fishing trips with his Da and the history he taught him of the places they visited while he follows his Dads coffin in utter personal agony, regretting years of non contact. Nine hours later that day a steel door slams shut and that’s fucking it.
“I never thought that things would end like this,
not in my wildest dreams.
But life is cruel and sometimes twisted,
like their judges and it seems.
that nothing here is sacred and I know what that means.”
A song that will take your breathe away the beauty and sadness of it.

Another Wasted Life

Another Wasted Life
2023
You’re the one

Another Wasted Life’ was actually written after I heard of the story of Kalief Browder, who was put into solitary confinement after not having been charged for a crime. When he was released, it wasn’t too much longer after that he committed suicide.

It obviously fits very squarely into the mission that I’ve had for a very long time. It’s one that I hope will bring more attention to the plight of exonerated men who are still stuck in prison because somebody wanted to close a case or because somebody lied and fingered them, or just because once you’re in, they don’t want you to get out.

Piazza Barberina

Piazza Barberina

The Torture Never Stops

The Torture Never Stops
Siamo vent'anni prima.
Boh... La incollo qui sotto.

Eugenio Montale, Il sogno del prigioniero,
in La bufera e altro (1956)

sfrigolio dalle cave, girarrosti

può salvarsi da questo sterminio d'oche;
che chi obiurga se stesso, ma tradisce
e vende carne d'altri, afferra il mestolo anzi
che terminare nel paté
destinato agl'Iddii pestilenziali.

Tardo di mente, piagato... (Continues)

Holloway Song

Holloway Song
The Greenham Common Women's Peace Camp Songbook

Greenham Common Women's Peace Camp was a peace camp established to protest at nuclear weapon being sited at RAF Greenham Common in Berkshire, England. The camp began in September 1981 after a Welsh group called "Women for Life on Earth" arrived at Greenham to protest against the decision of the Government to allow cruise missiles to be based there.

On 1 April 1983, tens of thousands of protestors formed a 14 mile human chain from Greenham to the Aldermaston nuclear power station and the ordnance factory at Burghfield.

On 4 April 1984, the women were evicted from the Common by Newbury District Council. However by nightfall the women all returned to reform the camp.

The last missiles left the camp in 1991 but the camp remained in place until 2000 after protestors won the right to house a memorial on the site.
