THE 1913 MASSACRE | IL MASSACRO DEL 1913 |
| |
Take a trip with me in nineteen thirteen | Vieni insieme a me nel 1913 |
To Calumet, Michigan, in the copper country | A Calumet, nel Michigan, la terra del rame. |
I'll take you to a place called Italian Hall | Ti porterò in un posto chiamato “Casa Italiana” |
Where the miners are having their big Christmas ball | Dove i minatori stanno facendo la loro gran festa di Natale. |
| |
I'll take you through a door, and up a high stairs | Ti farò passare per una porta, e in cima a uno scalone |
Singing and dancing is heard everywhere | Si sente dappertutto cantare e ballare. |
I will let you shake hands with the people you see | Ti farò stringer le mani alla gente che vedi, |
And watch the kids dance round that big Christmas tree | E guardare i bimbi che ballano attorno al grande albero di Natale. |
| |
You ask about work and you ask about pay | Poi chiedi del lavoro, chiedi dei salari, |
They'll tell you that they make less than a dollar a day | Ti dicono che prendono meno di un dollaro al giorno |
Working the copper claims, risking their lives | Lavorando per soddisfare le richieste di rame, rischiando la vita, |
So it's fun to spend Christmas with children and wives | E allora è così bello passare il Natale con le mogli e i figli. |
| |
There's talking and laughing and songs in the air | Si parla, si ride, risuonano canzoni |
And the spirit of Christmas is there everywhere | C'è lo spirito natalizio, là, in ogni parte. |
Before you know it, you're friends with us all | Prima ancora di saperlo sei già amico di noi tutti |
And you're dancing around and around in the hall | E ti metti a ballare e a girare nella sala. |
| |
Well, a little girl sits down by the Christmas tree lights | Beh, una bimba si siede vicino all'albero di Natale illuminato |
To play the piano, so you gotta keep quiet | A suonare il piano, e allora devi stare zitto. |
To hear all this fun you would not realize | E in mezzo a questa gioia non immagineresti proprio |
That the copper-boss thug-men are milling outside | Che gli sgherri assassini dei minerari, là fuori, stanno tramando qualcosa. |
| |
The copper-boss thugs stuck their heads in the door | Gli scherani dei minerari s'intrufolarono attraverso la porta |
One of them yelled and he screamed, "There's a fire!" | E uno di loro gridò a squarciagola: “Al fuoco! Al fuoco!” |
A lady, she hollered, "There's no such a thing! | Una donna allora urlò: “Ma non c'è proprio un bel niente! |
Keep on with your party, there's no such a thing" | Continuate a far festa, non c'è proprio un bel niente!” |
| |
A few people rushed, and it was only a few | Qualcuno si precipitò fuori, ma erano solo in pochi: |
"It's only the thugs and the scabs fooling you" | “Sono solo gli sgherri e i crumiri che vi prendono in giro!” |
A man grabbed his daughter and carried her down | Un uomo afferrò sua figlia e la portò giù di sotto, |
But the thugs held the door and he could not get out | Ma gli sgherri tenevano la porta e non poté uscire. |
| |
And then others followed, a hundred or more | E poi arrivano altri, un centinaio e più, |
But most everybody remained on the floor | E quasi tutti rimasero a terra. |
The gun-thugs they laughed at their murderous joke | Gli sgherri ridevano di quel loro scherzo assassino, |
While the children were smothered on the stair by the door | Mentre i bimbi soffocavano sulla scala vicino alla porta. |
| |
Such a terrible sight I never did see | Una scena così terribile non l'ho mai veduta. |
We carried our children back up to their tree | Riportammo su i nostri figli, al loro albero di Natale. |
The scabs outside still laughed at their spree | Là fuori gli sgherri ancora ridevano del loro tiro, |
And the children that died there were seventy-three | E i bambini che morirono furono settantatré. |
| |
The piano played a slow funeral tune | Il piano suonava una lenta marcia funebre, |
And the town was lit up by a cold Christmas moon | E la città era illuminata da una fredda luna di Natale. |
The parents they cried and the miners they moaned | I genitori piangevano, e i minatori singhiozzavano: |
"See what your greed for money has done" | “Guardate che ha fatto la vostra avidità di denaro.” |
