SIGARETTE[1] | CIGARETTES |
| |
Una fredda notte, nebbiosa, buio dappertutto, | A cold night, foggy, and darkness everywhere |
| A boy stands sadly and looks around. |
Dalla pioggia lo protegge solo una parete, | Only a wall protects him from the rain |
Tiene un paniere in mano, | He holds a basket in his hand |
Ed i suoi occhi chiedono, muti, a ognuno: | and his eyes beg everyone silently: |
Non ho più la forza di camminare per la strada, | I don't have any strength left to walk the streets |
Affamato e cencioso, fradicio di pioggia. | Hungry and ragged, wet from the rain, |
Vago qua e là dove capita [2] fin dall'alba [3], | I shlep around from dawn. |
Nessuno mi dà nulla da guadagnare, | Nobody gives me any earnings, |
| everyone laughs and makes fun of me |
| |
Kupitye, [4] comprate le mie sigarette, | Buy my cigarettes! |
Asciutte dalla pioggia, non inzuppate, | Dry ones, not wet from the rain |
Compratele dunque, sono davvero [5] poco care, | Buy real cheap, |
Compratele e abbiate pietà di me, | Buy and have pity on me. |
Salvatemi dalla fame ora. | Save me from hunger now |
Kupitye, comprate i fiammiferi, sono i migliori, | Buy my matches, wonderful ones, the best, |
Con questo risolleverete un orfano. | and with that you will uplift an orphan. |
Ma invano grido, invano vado su e giù, [6] | My screaming and my running will be for naught. |
Nessuno vuole comprarmi nulla, | Nobody wants to buy from me- |
E io dovrò crepare come un cane. | I will have to perish like a dog. |
| |
Mio papà ha perso le mani in guerra, | My father lost his hands in the war |
La mamma non ha potuto più reggere le sventure | My mother couldn't bear her troubles anymore |
E giovane se n'è andata nella tomba, | And was driven to her grave at a young age |
Io sono rimasto solo al mondo | I was left on this earth |
Infelice e solo come un sasso. | Unhappy and alone like a stone |
Raccolgo briciole per mangiarmele al Mercato Vecchio, | I gather crumbs to eat in the old market |
[7] | A hard bench in the cold park is my bed |
E come non bastasse, i poliziotti | and on top of that, the police |
Mi pestano coi duri bordi delle loro armi, | beat me with the edges of their swords and sticks |
Implorare e piangere non serve a niente. | my pleas and my cries are of no use. |
| |
Kupitye, comprate le mie sigarette, | Buy my cigarettes! |
Asciutte dalla pioggia, non inzuppate, | Dry ones, not wet from the rain |
Compratele dunque, sono davvero poco care, | Buy real cheap, |
Compratele e abbiate pietà di me, | Buy and have pity on me. |

Ma invano grido, invano vado su e giù, | My screaming and my running will be for naught. |
Nessuno vuole comprarmi nulla, | Nobody wants to buy from me- |
E io dovrò crepare come un cane. | I will have to perish like a dog. |
| |
Avevo una sorellina, figlia di nessuno [8], | I had a little sister, a child of nature |
Insieme a me vagava per tutto il giorno. | Together we shlepped around for an entire year. |
Con lei mi andava tanto meglio, | When with her, it was much easier for me. |
La fame era più leggera | My hunger would become lighter |
Quando soltanto la guardavo. | When I glanced at her |
| died in my arms on a street bench |
E quando l'ho perduta, | And when I lost her |
Ho perduto tutto quanto, | I lost everything |
| Let death come already for me, too. |
| |
Kupitye, comprate le mie sigarette, | Buy my cigarettes! |
Asciutte dalla pioggia, non inzuppate, | Dry ones, not wet from the rain |
Compratele dunque, sono davvero poco care, | Buy real cheap, |
Compratele e abbiate pietà di me, | Buy and have pity on me. |

[2] Lett. solo “io vago attorno”, “vagabondo”.
[5] Espressione ebraica: “in fede, in buona fede”.
[6] Lett. “Vano il mio gridare e il mio andare qua e là” (in yiddish, come in tedesco comune, loyfn [laufen] non significa soltanto “correre” ma, genericamente, “camminare, andare”.)
[7] Lett. “giaciglio nel freddo parco”.
[8] L'espressione kind fun der natur non significa “dono della natura” (v. la traduzione francese), ma “figlio/a di nessuno”: un'orfanella come lo sventurato protagonista di questa riedizione della “Piccola Fiammiferaia”.
